1. Drake
2. Kendrick
3. J.Cole
4. Wale
5. Meek Mill

1. Drake is the most complete MC (content, flow, lyricism, creativity,) and direct representation of a laid back emotional (emotions being a good and bad thing) generation of fans. He's also showing growth with each album. His impact on music is undeniable as he slowly becoming the "go to guy" for features on album cuts and singles.

2. King Kendrick is right behind him. He's just as "complete" but only has 1 album (2 if you count section 80) to his name. He looks to be progressing with each project as well. His voice and lyrical ability are distinct and automatically separate him from the competition. Very interested to see how he follows up GKMC. I'm looking forward to the follow up.

3. Cole World. Got him at number 3. I loved his first two album and like Drake, he's a great representation of the new fan. These kids that went to college and finished programmed for a world that doesn't value or view college the way it did 20 years ago. Dude could easily surpass Drake & Kendrick but I caution him to watch how boring he can be at times. Yes.. J.Cole is an amazing MC who can be very boring.

4. Wale - A great artist who has a lot of potential. Sometimes I think he gets in his own way and it hurts the music. You ever met someone who cared to much about everyones opinion and as a result of it, they tried appeasing everyone and ended up unhappy. Wale! Dude can literally do it all. I hope he embraces his diversity as an artist and stop letting his fans keep him in a box.

More About Nothing Wale
Ambition Wale

Both great projects with different vibes. If Wale can put it all together he's taking over.

5. Meek Mill

The last of a dying breed. Somebody got rep for the School Boy Q, YG, Yo Gotti gangsta rapper that is leading the way in a dying sub genre. Meek has become a polarizing artist. You either love him or hate him but you've got to respect his art. He represents one of the most valued demographics in hip hop period. His story telling and energy set him apart from the competition. You can argue School Boy Q is more talented but he doesn't have that commanding presence that grabs your attention every time you hear him spit.

Meek is 5 because unlike the 4 in front of him he hasn't learned balance. His album was "ok". It started strong but ended up tailing off with lackluster material while his mixtapes were pure fire. Meek has already made an impact on the game with just one album.

The Intro
Amen
Burn
I'm a boss
House Party
Tony Story
Maybach Curtains

Meek to some degree like Wale needs to put everything together. Everything can't be loud and basic. He's got legs, Tony Story, Middle of the summer, Love don't live here anymore" didn't make the debut album?

who you got?

Quality and to some degree popularity. Popularity has always had a direct impact on pop culture.

I've grown to love a lot of underground cats like Gibbs but I can't cross him over into a top 5 with no album. Its like Gibbs is the hottest girl who hasn't gotten a break yet but the neighborhood loves her.

Pusha is a genius but he isn't really new, right?

What is considered new school? Are we going by age or catalog?

Age and decade

Late 2000s to present

08- present

Preferably artists with albums. It's hard to measure the impact these underground acts have when everything can be positioned to look bigger than it actually is.

For instance, I rock with Gibbs but I find myself bringing him up in convos with peers offline and they like who is that?

I'm going to do some homework on Nipsey. I enjoyed last year's Creenshaw and the first Bullets Ain't Got Names but I lost interest early.

I see Gibbs getting a lot of love and while I love Gibbs we have to keep the criteria in mind.
