One league has spent its existence stressing the importance of every game and team success. The other league tells you the regular season games don’t matter almost on a daily basis and had to institute player and organizational punishments to force players to actually play.
People pick up on that and have understandably chosen to consume the product they feel has importance/urgency/relevance.
This is only a half-truth.
The
real truth is back before there wasn't any mass public opinion over what was stressed between the NFL and NBA, the NFL became this country's favorite pastime in the 60s/70s (overtaking baseball), because it became more of a reflection of the country at the time parlayed with its hunger for violence. It had absolutely nothing to do with one league stressing importance of every game vs. a league that tells you the regular season doesn't matter, because back then that wasn't even a thing on a grand scale.
What you're highlighting are red herrings.
It's the reason why nothing has touched the NFL for half a century in that regard.
The NBA has no one to blame but themselves for their place in public opinion.
Even if the NBA chose to do all these things that you swear the NFL does, it still wouldn't be more relevant/important than the NFL (or even on the same level).
The NBA did sell its soul off MJ's image, but by and large, it had no choice.
It doesn't have the safety net that the NFL has. When folks watch the NFL they see America; it's why they'll defend it no matter how good/bad the product is. Whereas when folks watch the NBA, they merely see players trying to put a ball in a hoop; it's why they'll criticize it no matter how good/bad the product is.
