Last I read, Rivers had a 6"7 wingspan which isn't bad at all.


As for still being interested in Gasol That simply does not make sense, you're better off just getting someone like Speights to come off the bench.

Portland isn't letting Batum go, just can't see it happening but he'd be perfect at the 3 for you, and would allow you to draft Rivers without hesitation.

There's a million and one reasons why Gasol doesn't make sense and it would cost too much and would decimate the wing spot, but Speights doesn't make much sense either. They really need a rim protector like Asik, Stiemsma or Dalembert. Other bigs can be signed to give Love relief.

Or they could just draft a Fab Melo or Kyle O'Quinn and have Jack Sikma develop him.

Can you guys explain to me the difference 6'4 and 6'6 makes at the 2? There's only so much you can learn about basketball if you haven't played competitively. I get that wingspan has a huge impact on defense as far as shot blocking and shot changing....but on the offensive end I don't understand how being undersized by an inch or 2 matters that much if you can beat your man off the dribble or create enough space to get a shot off.

Being 6'6'' just makes it a little easier for your initial line of vision on offense. Also, when you're taller, there's more of you to absorb contact. That was a major reason why someone like Kevin Martin despite being 190 pounds made a living going to the line. There was more to make contact with whereas if you're shorter, you're a block candidate every time.

Biggest sleeper of the NBA draft?

Even most diehard college basketball fans don't know a whole lot about Tennessee Tech swingman Kevin Murphy, but the 6-foot-5, 185-pounder may be positioning himself to get selected late in the first round.

ESPN's NBA draft insider Chad Ford writes today that Murphy was one of the players who raised his draft value at the NBA draft workout in New Jersey over the weekend.

"He's such a natural scorer and can get the ball in the basket a variety of ways," one GM told Ford. "He reminds me a little of Kevin Martin. I think he'd be in the mix in the late first."

Here's Ford with more on Murphy, who averaged 20.6 ppg as a senior.

Murphy answered many of his critics

"Murphy was one of the best scorers in college basketball this season (he put up 50 points against SIU Edwardsville this season), and he showed in New Jersey he can get his own when the level of competition increases. That was a major concern for NBA scouts after Murphy struggled against top competition during the college season. Murphy wasn't the most explosive player in New Jersey, but he's quick, has a sophisticated midrange game, can shoot the long ball and showed that he can create his own shot in a variety of ways."

He's a lankier Marshon Brooks, and the level of comp he played sucked.

Highest I can see him going is #29 to Chicago (and if by some chance OKC takes him at 28, then that says a lot about what they'll do with Harden). Unless he shows out next week at the Minnesota workouts, he's a mid 2nd rounder to me. Talented though.


And yes, Minnesota (with help from Atlanta) will organize a huge workout next week for some 2nd rounders and fringe guys. I don't know if they'll still have the huge guard workout right before the draft, but looks like all will go according to plan)

Wingspan is for perimeter defense, covering space

Standing reach is shot altering

A lot of guys have crazy wingspans but standing reach is more normal because they have a wide frame
