true, the lack of stability at AD is troubling for any vet coach im sure. might have to go with a budding assistant
man this is unrelated but i just realized

Brady Hoke's career as a head coach is pretty much DONE. He didn't even do THAT BAD OF A JOB like a tyrone willingham type total botch or anything, but...he gotta be dunzo for power 5 for any team "oregon st" status or lower...if that...maybe vanderbilt or lower.

not sure how money motivated Charles is (hes not married/no kids) but Miami cant pay him what Texas could. full autonomy and access to elite athletes tho, hes crossed my mind but only as a pipe-dream

There are a few reasons I think chip would consider miami, vs. not so much texas.
  1. fit...texas head coaches have to be texas lifers essentially and I think they just came to that realization after coach strong was hired. texas is a state so vast, with so many thousands of high schools in all divisions and classifications..thats a lot of hands to shake and a lot of people to know. miami...not so much
  2. boosters and alumni...mack brown may have slipped at the end of his time there, but he was the best at politiciking and being the mayor, slapping backs and schmoozing with folks. chip is introverted and anti-social. he would NOT be cut out for this. miami is wayyy less interference from boosters, alums, and much less socializing involved
  3. miami would probably give him the control he needs. texas...again...too many competiting interests for him to "fully take over"

all that being said, chip with south florida talent would be a scary sight :damn:

dantonio isnt going anywhere :heh:
Thank you. And also thank you for getting the man's name right. No idea why this is even being discussed. Also find it funny that people's first inclination in hiring coaches in sports is to go with retreads and "names" instead of doing your due diligence and finding a guy who knows what the hell he's doing and has a plan. Guess people get scared after that model fails a couple times, but I've always been a proponent of the "find the next [insert coaching icon]" thought process. A lot of that has to do with being able to have patience as well.

its deeper than record with some tenures, i dont see either one getting another power 5 chance. Coker had a title and never got a chance because of the fukkery at the end

for every "find the next" hire like pete caroll or brian kelly, jim harbaugh or mike dantonio....theres 3 tyrone willinghams, rick neuhisels, Gary barnetts, will muschamps, charlie weises...

the best bet is the coach who has succeeded at a medium level power 5 school...Schools like OK st, michigan state, oregon st, Cal,, pitt, kansas...i'd rather get a coach who is starting to build something there than a retread coordinator like Cam Cameron. a coach getting 10/11 wins in the MAC is even a better choice to me.

Which is why i'm surprised that Mike Gundy is still at oklahoma state....how has he not blipped on any of these radars...?

Which is why I said "Guess people get scared after that model fails a couple times" and that a lot of it comes down to having patience. Personally, I think it's ridiculous to hire a guy in college and not even let him see one of his recruiting classes become seniors. Outside of having absolutely, unforgivably TERRIBLE seasons (your Willingham example is a great one), I think any move in under 4 years is premature.

Completely agree with your point about getting the guy that has actually built real D1 success before. As for Mike Gundy, believe it or not I really think there are some guys that just want to be the guy that built a program from 0 or close to it (think Paterno, Bowden). Gundy is going to end up a legend in Stillwater, and if he ever fukked around and won a chip, would have a statue built outside the stadium when it's all said and done.

yeah, some guys really value that and have established great lives in the city their program is in. I think Dantonio is one of those guys. Chris Peterson probably is at washington which is why he took that job over other opportunities.
