Either you're a good perimeter defender or not. Period. No big man behind anyone will make them a better defender.

If Howard made Harden a better defender last year they might've made the WCF last year.

You know why they didn't?


Because Howard nor any shot blocker will make any perimeter player a better defender

The great defensive big man can help in multiple ways. It makes players less hesitant to drive which makes the defenders job easier as they can just play the ballhander for the jumper. Two, they can cover up mistakes by contesting shots at the rim so the defensive player doesn't look as bad. Three, it gives the defender more leeway to gamble to go for steals or and play more aggressive ball denial defense knowing that if the gamble doesn't pay off the big man can still fix the mistake at the rim.

Obviously there are great defenders and bad defenders regardless, but a great big man usually bumps that up an extra level or two on top of it.

How long has it been since, because LA appears to be further along in their rebuild than Philadelphia and they've been at it longer. That's what I'm getting at, you all want to zero in on a misstep and post smilies instead of taking it for full context.

It's cool though, I'll gladly take whatever L for that one year. Not even tripping.
