An east Alabama high school band director is going the extra mile for his students. Literally.
Matthew Goodman is jogging about 415 miles from Roanoke, Alabama, to New Orleans to raise money for Handley High School’s band, which was selected in February to perform in the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Marching Band Program. The band needs to raise $80,000 for hotel, food, transportation and educational activities such as a trip to the National World War II Museum.
"I am striving to provide more resources and opportunities for the students in the rural community of Roanoke," Goodman said. "I believe that music saves lives and that students need to be exposed to various cultures and opportunities outside of their community. Band is the perfect opportunity."
Goodman said they started fundraising for the trip in May through car washes and snack sales, but the band has still come up short. Goodman said many of his band members don't have the means to pay for the trip themselves.
Goodman said participating in the Sugar Bowl will give the 63 band students an opportunity to showcase their skills in the national spotlight. Along with marching in the parade, the band will also compete with other high schools from across the nation during a Battle of the Bands field show and participate in the halftime show on New Year’s Day.
