Top 13 teams in the CFP:
Bama
Clemson
Notre Dame
Michigan
UGA
OU
LSU
Wazzu
West Virginia
Ohio State
UCF
Florida
Syracuse
If we go by your way of thinking, why should Florida get a chance at a playoff? They've already lost multiple times this year, same with Syracuse and LSU. UCF has played one of the weakest schedules in recent memory.
So again why do you want to create a playoff to include teams that don't deserve a shot at a national title? I would rather leave out a potentially deserving team than include 5-6 teams that don't deserve a shot
And I say again....Top 6 makes perfect sense and it seems like they didn't do it on purpose to have people bicker and they milk the drama if it all.
Bama
Clemson
ND
Michigan
UGA
OU
As of right now with the current format
Bama & Clemson = 1st round byes
ND vs Mich winner play Clemson
UGA vs OU winner play Bama
The current format is fine if there are no conferences at all. The best four teams are good...but that's not the case because you do have conferences....5 of them and an independent.
ACC
Pac12
B1G
SEC
B12
Replace a cupcake games with "Conference Challenge" games that rotate each year with a marquee neutral site game from each.
ACC vs Pac12
B1G vs SEC
B12 vs B1G
SEC vs Pac12
B12 vs ACC
Next year
ACC vs B1G
SEC vs ACC
B12 vs PAC12
B1G vs PAC12
B12 vs SEC
And etc.
Now take the "most deserving" next 2 non power teams teams (or a top tier ranked ND) and during conference title week...they play a play in game.
Next take all Conference title winners...sort them by record and the committee will give them a seeding number. [You still have your built in drama here].
Top 2 teams get bye but gone is the luxury of having a month to prep for your opponent.
And like mentioned earlier
3 will play the play in game winner
4 plays 5
1 play 4v5 winner
2 plays 3v p.i.g. winner
Natty
The reason for the challenge is so that other conferences can gauge each other's skill set and it will give players a bowl game like experience early in the year which could help spread recruiting footprint for all teams. It can also be used for bowl game match ups to keep the conference pride thing relevant and draw some interest in the bowls again.
