544 strikeouts in 494.2 innings
And he had 23 complete games.
And 11 shutouts.

For comparison (and it's a different era, but still)
Tarik Skubal just won consecutive Cy Young awards. In those 2 seasons:

469 strikeouts in 387.1 innings
1 complete game
1 shutout

Skubal's ERA+ is 180 over those 2 years -- higher than the 176 Gooden posted. But his bWAR was 12.9 to Gooden's 17.6.

Dwight Gooden came into MLB from another planet.

I wish I was able to see this kind of Black excellence on the mound. I had to teach myself the game and when I started watching he was washed up on the Devil Rays. I really can't remember seeing a Black pitcher worth a damn until.... CC Sabathia and Dontrelle Willis? Who even was the best Black pitcher of the 90s?

I know our numbers in baseball have been dropping for decades, but even beyond that, I feel we have been kept off the mound for the same reasons they try to keep us from playing QB, these cacs don't want us to be in control of the game and responsible for wins and losses like that :mjpls:

The best black pitcher of the 90s was Pedro Martinez.

But see? You clowns on here talk that “me no black papi” bullshyt but yall don’t even consider Pedro black.

Right?
:troll:

Now if you meant African American, that answer is probably still Doc Gooden, maybe Tom Gordon or Dave Stewart. Though African American pitchers weren’t plentiful in the 90s. The best talent was probably in other sports.

Slippery slope, but you right. I tell everybody Acuña Black, so fukk it, Pedro is too :jawalrus:

It's not even just the best talent being in other sports, but at other positions. I'm sure Griffey and Bonds or even a guy like Mike Cameron had the arms to be frontline starters, but were such good hitters they weren't ever put on the mound for real.

Remember when the Braves had both Upton brothers and Heyward in the outfield?
