Hikers confront alleged arsonist before his arrest at Runyon Canyon, video shows

Hikers confront alleged arsonist at Runyon Canyon, video shows
A good Samaritan who happens to be a former football player chased the man down after he saw what happened.

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An alleged arsonist accused of setting a fire along the popular Runyon Canyon hiking trail was caught by hikers on Sunday. Video posted to social media shows the hikers confronting the man.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area shortly before noon on Sunday in response to a brush fire. The blaze reportedly started with just one palm tree but spread to approximately a quarter-acre.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, approximately 53 firefighters on the ground worked together to extinguish the flames. Cellphone video showed air resources performing water drops in the area.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. But the story doesn't end there.

Davanah Dimarco and Scott Mitchell were out for their usual Sunday morning hike when they spotted a man running from a grassy area.

Mitchell, a former football player, immediately started chasing the man.

"The guy starts running off, and then within 15 seconds, the whole tree -- the tree's about 20 or 30 feet -- is fully engulfed in flames, and Davanh is like, 'He lit that fire! Go get him!'" Mitchell said.

Dimarco used her phone to record what was happening and captured footage of the man.

The man appeared to admit to the crime. When one woman asked if he lit the fire, he replied, "I did. You're right," video shows.

"A woman kind of points behind us, and a young girl started screaming, 'Fire!' And so we looked behind and we see a palm tree on fire," said witness Isabelle Zakheim.

Several people hiking in the area quickly surrounded the man Mitchell had stopped, as firefighters arrived and stopped the blaze from spreading.

"More people showed up, started calling the police and started calling the fire department, most importantly," Mitchell said.

"I have to say, it was lovely how quick everyone, just bystanders and people who were watching what was going on, were trying to help," Zakheim said.

Police arrived and took the accused arsonist into custody.

Mitchell and Dimarco say, given the devastation that fires have already caused in Los Angeles this year, they knew they had to take action.

"I don't even think we had a moment to think about it, but I mean, there was some anger because of what happened in January. So we kind of just didn't want that to happen again," Dimarco said.

The suspect's name was not immediately released. His arrest was handled by L.A. park rangers. It's unclear what charges he may face.
