You guys are both right and wrong too.
It can't be ignored how DAZN and with it Matchroom became a global presence on a way PBC and TR so far couldn't and that the boxing world got bigger since the 90s with the US not the be all end all anymore so it's even more important to be present elsewhere too.
At the same time true that Eddie has struggled to set up a good US roster and the US market is still the biggest one even if not by the distance it once was and while Matchroom has AJ who is at worst the 2nd biggest name of this generation, it's a bit of a stretch to include Canelo to their roster now that Canelo's 2 fight deal is up with them. I know that he thinks Hearn the friendliest out of Arum, Haymon, DLH and Hearn but wouldn't call him a Matchroom fighter as of now.
So you are all right and wrong at the same time
All that matters is numbers and the money not where it’s from. The Saudi deal Eddie secured but Fury pulled out of was gonna be the biggest site deal in history.
If we were talking solely U.S you wouldn’t say Matchroom are far ahead of the pack, but globally they are and that’s what I’m talking about, as a whole not just one country.
I don’t really think Canelo is a stretch, Canelo has said Eddie Hearn and Matchroom are by far the best and he’s one of the top 2 stars in boxing. He’s also said he wants to continue with Eddie and they’ve just done a partnership to do Mexican shows together. He’s with Eddie now, he works with a number of fighters without contracts or short term ones. Going forward he’s going to be working with Eddie and Matchroom and DAZN is more dependent on who he’s fighting but that’s Canelo’s team now. If the Plant fight doesn’t happen next it will be Bivol or GGG or someone like that on DAZN with Matchroom and even if it’s Plant on PBC Eddie is still involved.
So Matchroom have the biggest U.K and U.S star that are consistently active. They have a deal coming with BBC too that is a free channel in U.K, which will help get them more exposure and Eddie himself has just done a direct deal with some of the big social media platforms like IG.
Edit: Think this was one of the quotes from Canelo..
“The idea is to continue to work with Eddie Hearn for a very long time. He is the best promoter in the world, by far,” said Alvarez to TV Azteca (H/T to
BoxingScene.com). “I love working with him because he is a promoter who cares about even the little details, which makes everything much better. He never has a problem with his fighters and he listens to the wishes of his fighters. It is great to finally work with this type of promoter. It is true we signed a two-fight deal, for February and May [vs. Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders]. I like this way of working, and Eddie is happy to continue with this too [to work on one and two-flight deals].
