Oscar De La Hoya Reveals That He Was Raped at The Age of 13

Oscar De La Hoya has revealed that he was “raped” by an older woman when he was a teenager.
The former six-division boxing champion and Hall of Famer made the shocking disclosure in an interview with the Los Angeles Times published Wednesday. De La Hoya has been making the media rounds lately to promote his upcoming comeback fight against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort in a pay-per-view show staged by Triller on Sept. 11 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
De La Hoya, 48, says he was 13 when an older woman took advantage of him.
“I was raped at 13, from a woman, an older woman,” De La Hoya told the LA Times. “Thirteen, lost my virginity over being, you know, being raped, basically.”
“I was in Hawaii, I think, at some tournament,” he continued, without naming the woman. “She was over 35.”’
The Golden Boy Promotions head, who has long battled alcohol and drug addiction, admitted he has struggled to come to terms with his past trauma.
“You suppress everything,” said De La Hoya. “You’re living this life, the Golden Boy, but, oh sh!t, wait, that’s still there. Like I never, like, thought about it, I never processed it, I never really thought how my feelings are…until one day it just comes out, and you don’t know how to deal with it.”
De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) and Belfort, 44, have agreed to fight at a contract weight of 185 pounds. Belfort has only one professional boxing match under his belt, a win over Josemario Neves in 2006. De La Hoya has not fought in 13 years; his last professional fight was in 2008, a stoppage loss to Manny Pacquiao.
A product of East Los Angeles, De La Hoya rocketed to superstardom on the heels of winning a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. As a professional, he wound up winning 10 titles across six divisions. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014.
