When word came out earlier this week about ESPN laying off up to 400 employees, we crossed our fingers hoping this wouldn’t affect anyone in boxing. Unfortunately, it turns out not to be the case. ESPN Director of Programming Doug Loughrey, the man who ran the network’s “Friday Night Fights” boxing program, is one of those let go. Not good for ESPN boxing.

I am going to be pissed if they cancel FNF.
I still haven't totally gotten over USA cancelling Tuesday Night Fights and that got dropped in 1998!

FNF will probably be cancelled but let's be real, how important was it really? How many relevant fights did it show? Just a couple a year.

It did bring us Prods, D-Rod, and Kim lately though

I used to LOVE Tuesday Night Fights!

Still, ESPN has been struggling and the boxing has been for a while too I think. Its very hard to put on a good card. Most of the times, you may initially have a good card, but then there are always disputes with the fighters getting the money they want to be paid....this is a trickle down usually because the venues want more site fees and promoters not trying to shave a penny off of their profits. The effect is...a lot of last minute cancellations and the card lineup ending totally different than it began. A lot of times some fighters have been known to take a last minute flight, bus, or train within 24 hours or less just to be a replacement for an opponent who fell through. Laying off the director helps remedy none of this.

this is true. it is not like it used to be as I mentioned in my post above detailing just a few of FNF's issues. although I havent had time to watch it in some while now, its still always good for the news if nothing else. I love watching just for the guest commentators and the interviews.

@Dapper Dan I went to two FNF's here in Raleigh. One of them was Telesco vs Letterlough (R.I.P.) good shyt.

It's the only consistent non-premium channel boxing program for over a decade in the United States

This dies, on ESPN of all channels, we're taking a major loss........

Less televised boxing, less fans, period. FNF housed CLASSIC KO's and BRAWLS, career beginnings to many great and hall of fame fighters, Teddy Atlas, launched Max and B. Kenny into popularity; man don't start rationalizing this as some sort of minor setback, cause in the US we're getting fukkED out of boxing not being a stable on major basic cable television. ESPN was as close as we've gotten to being back on a NBC, CBS, ABC or FOX

Boxing itself with its numerous deficiencies in competent scoring, match-making and fair practicing sanctioning bodies has been fukking us for years, this takes away the vaseline :to:

pretty much FNF needs to stay on the air..hell they aired what i called the fight of the year in 2011 with wolak-rodriguez 1...they need boxing on a non premium TV platform..tuesday night fight was the shyt back in the day...we can't keep losing these boxing shows

Sorry, but I dont watch much network tv at all now and havent for a while...but boxing cant really get a consistent home. NBC owns Versus now right? Remember when TR had their shows on there? What happened with that? Also, DKP used to tape delay his PPV undercards and sometimes the main events after a month or so. I think he was doing that on MSG and affiliates. I grew up on network tv boxing. Watching Roger Mayweather, JCC, Saad Muhammad on NBC....and SRL, Donald Curry, etc...on Wide World of Sports. Those were the days.

you used the exact same word I used....consistent. thats the key. I couldnt have said it better. even if viewership isnt that great....its still instrumental in breaking new fighters.
