Going through this book and when I got to this section it made me think just how well conditioned fighters were at the turn of last century

Yeah Freddy Roach mentioned in an interview that people would look at the pre 1960s fighters and be like "Oh wow, they fought over 100 times, that's crazy"

But what they actually did was that they fought more and sparred less. And fighting every month or every couple of months kept them sharp and in shape. I kind of wish new age Boxers went back to this. These long layoffs ruins fighters. And back then the Boxers were household names on top of it, mostly because they fought like 4 to 5 times a year and their name was in the media all the time

One thing I miss with older Boxing is that they had so much trilogies and even some had 5 fights with the same person. Another benefit by fighting alot in the ring

The issue is the US Credit system is on life support so nobody can bankroll this and pay the fighters we "care about" what they "deserve". Monster the only one who is doing this but he is a Japanese creation + the Saudi stimulus.

I think it was just how the sport was. Since they were still coming out of the bare knuckle days and gloves were 6oz they still used a bit of wrestling and even though it may not look like much it is very taxing so you have to be in phenomenal shape just to go a few rounds. Add fighting outside under the sun in the summer :whew:

The 15 round era guys were crazy conditioned too but some of the old school guys accused that generation of being softer than them lol

it was definitely taxing plus most were working regular ass physical jobs which also helped to keep them in shape..some of those fighters ended up broken, punch drunk, or clinically insane..

sam langford was fighting virtually blind until he no longer knew where his corner was
harry greb couldn't go to sleep without a light on because sight was fading in his one remaining eye
cats fighting with terminal diseases so they can support their family
a broken nose was low key one foot to the grave because there was a 50 percent chances you wouldn't wake up from surgery if they had to put you to sleep
no neutral corner rule

shyt was too crazy in those days

Yeah I used to read up on a lot of the fighters back then and yeah sparring was more testing out techniques than just fighting with headgear and 16 oz gloves like it is now. Both guys are trying to help each other rather than trying to one up each other.
Since the gloves weren't as big as they are now, they weren't punching as much to the head which led to less brain rattling.

Sam and Harry also fought an insane amount of fights. Also a number of managers and promoters were carny folks so they were jerking these dudes for there proper pay.
Not everyone ended up in bad shape think Joe Jeanette had almost 200 fights but he stayed in good health and was smart with his money to where he had gym and car garage.
A lot of dudes back then didn't do themselves any favors with being heavy drinkers, constantly partying, and not keeping up with there money causing them to keep fighting well after their primes

Thank you. The fighters back then were an inverse of today. More fights, less sparring. Nowadays it's less fights, more sparring

This is why you see so many cases of G-Man, Terry Norris, Riddikk Bowe, etc battling with so much head injuries and they were notorious for the high amount of sparring they endured

Terry is a case of too much hard sparring...he expired because of it

Bowe is a case because of his weight fluctuations and then golota denting his brain

g-man issue was he gambled after getting an injury from julian jackson and a lot of factors came together all at once

Nah it's mostly because alot of fighters these days never think of the long term, only short term. You have fighters sitting out for months "waiting on a big payday" so they can get paid $10 mill for a fight. When they could have just fought 3 times a year for $3 mill each fight. The latter is the more common sense one because you get paid similar and you have more visibility with casual fans

Perfect example was Keith Thurman. Dude out of his own mouth admitted to turning down multiple fights because "the money wasn't enough". And that he won't get in the ring if it's under a certain amount, etc. When he's not realizing that fighting multiple lesser money fights will make him sharp, risk less injury, and add more visibility to his fame. And isn't it ironic that his "big payday" that he was supposed to get this year against Fundora was cancelled because tickets weren't selling :russ: :dead: :dead:

People around G-Man said hard sparring was a factor

And yes Bowe's weight fluctuations was because he was undisciplined and needed more sparring to get back in shape lol. His coach Eddie Futch had grown tired of him
