Guillermo Rigondeaux's Goal is To Unify The Division

By Mike Coppinger

Fresh off a KO 1, Guillermo Rigondeaux is looking for a bigger and better fight to close out 2014.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist is looking for someone to co-promote him along with Caribe Promotions now that his deal with Top Rank has expired. In the meantime, Team Rigondeaux is calling for a unification fight with fellow beltholders Kiko Martinez and Leo Santa Cruz.

"We hope to get a fight against Kiko Martinez or Leo Santa Cruz before the end of the year," Rigondeaux's manager Gary Hyde told BoxingScene.com. " Rigo will welcome any challenge from ranked fighters but not until he secures a promotional deal. We have a number of inquiries from various promoters and there could be an announcement early next week."

Rigondeaux is the lineal junior featerweight champion, but he stills want to become the undisputed champ. A fight with Santa Cruz in particular would be fascinating, and would likely make for a good action fight.

The WBO recently ordered Rigondeaux (14-0, 9KOs) to make a mandatory defense against Chris Avalos (24-2, 18KOs). Caribe has already reached out to

Thurman's trainer talking bout Roberto Garcia as the next opponent:snoop:

Garcia ain't the worst name to be fighting. Dude is on a decent lil run (even though he just got dropped by Prescott the other day in a good fight)

I can't even front though, Thurman should be fighting a bigger name though. Like Alexander or Khan. Garcia really ain't any better than a Deigo Chaves for the resume at this point and at least he was undefeated when Thurman got him.

He needs to fight at least 1 legit top 10 opponent in his weight class. This is getting crazy now.

I read an article yesterday which basically said he's Jeff Lacy all over again:dead:

Young Florida KO artist, never fought a legit opponent, Dan Birmingham as his trainer, messed his shoulder while with Birmingham:wow:

Is Thurman gonna get Lacy'd in his 1st step up in Championship competition?:lupe:

Thurman's trainer talking bout Roberto Garcia as the next opponent:snoop:
He's never been KO'd. We can change that. :jawalrus:

"But in the last few days [Thurman adviser] Al [Haymon] told us we would have a [Showtime] date in October," Birmingham said. "We don't have the date nailed down yet or an opponent, but Keith will be back in October. I don't want to speculate on an opponent, but Roberto Garcia, who just signed with Al, might make a good opponent. He has got a great record and he's a good fighter."

Birmingham said that eventually he believes that Thurman will meet Shawn Porter, another talented undefeated welterweight in the Haymon stable. There has been a lot of talk about that potential fight, but Porter, of course, must defeat Kell Brook in a mandatory title defense on Aug. 16. Even if it does happen, it's probably a couple of fights away.

"I think that fight is inevitable," Birmingham said of Porter-Thurman. "We know those guys, Shawn and his dad [Kenny Porter]. We have Shawn in our camp before and we're friends with them, but this is also business. We all know they might have to fight. When they do, it'll be a great fight."

Haymon is dictating these cards and keeping all his fighters safe. Say whatever about Schaefer, but he went guns blazing on cards.
