Mikey Garcia Return Eyed For June on SHO, 3 To 4 Fights in 2017

By Steve Kim

Last weekend, Mikey Garcia thrashed previously undefeated Dejan Zlaticanin with a three round knockout to win the WBC lightweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight was carried on Showtime.

It was the third world title for Garcia, who previously captured WBO belts at featherweight and super featherweight.

So what's next for the career of the three-division champ?

Well, to make up for lost time after sitting out for much of 2014 and all of 2015 as he legally battled for his promotional freedom against Top Rank, Garcia intends to be very active in the coming months - with as many as two to three more fights in 2017.

His brother and co-trainer, Robert Garcia, tells BoxingScene.com - "The plan that we have and what we were promised by Showtime is that they were going to give Mikey three fights this year. So if I'm not mistaken they're already planning out a Southern California fight in one of those big venues for June.

"That's what I was told, but this was just a three round fight, Mikey didn't get hurt, he didn't get injured. So I wouldn't mind fighting Mikey hopefully fighting four times because we've got to catch up to the two-and-a-half years that he lost."

Garcia returned to the ring on July 30th of last year, where he stopped former champion Elio Rojas in five rounds. That was his first fight in over two years. The 29-year old Garcia has a record of 36-0 (30 KO's).

"Mikey said he wants to fight three, four months from now and hopefully catch up to those two-and-a-half years. If not, three will be more than enough," Robert Garcia said.

Better matchmaking

exactly, whenever nikkas in the top 5 of their division are matched up against each other, you usually get pretty decent fights.

guys near the same level produce better fights when matched up especially if their styles mesh well. After that their respective strengths and weaknesses will fill in the gaps for each other.

For example, 2 guys ranked #12 and #14 will prolly make for a better fight than a guy ranked #3 fighting a guy ranked #10. Most times (not always tho) the talent or skill gap is too wide to make it competitive or entertaining enough for nikkas to watch it.

Unless you Erik Morales and you making exciting fights with just about anybody. :manny:

Andy Lee is set to make his return after a nearly 15 month layoff against KeAndrae Leatherwood on March 18 at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin’s middleweight championship against Danny Jacobs, RingTV.com has learned.

Lee-Leatherwood will take place immediately before the HBO PPV portion of the telecast on the freeview broadcast, according to promoter Tom Loeffler. The bout between Lee and Leatherwood was put together by promoter Lou DiBella, who handles Lee. “We’re excited to have Andy on the show,” Loeffler told RING. “He’s fought at MSG (three) times before. He’s undefeated. We’re definitely excited to have him on the card.”

The southpaw Lee will be fighting a day after Irish Olympian Michael Conlan makes his pro debut at Madison Square Garden’s Theater on St. Patrick’s Day. “I think it helps,” Loeffler said of the back-to-back shows. “I think it helps both cards — that’s the way I look at it. There will be 20,000 people at MSG on Saturday night. A lot of those are coming in from out of town. I’m sure a lot of our fans will go to the Conlan fight on Friday and then we’ve had a lot of requests for people staying there for the Conlan fight and they want to buy tickets for our show, as well. It will be a nice boxing weekend at MSG.”

Lee (34-3-1, 24 knockouts) hasn’t fought since he lost his WBO middleweight title to Billy Joe Saunders by a majority decision on Dec. 19, 2015 in Manchester, England. The last time he fought at Madison Square Garden, Lee flattened John Jackson with a sensational fifth-round knockout in June of 2014 on the Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez undercard after Lee had been hurt several times.

Alabama’s Leatherwood (19-3-1, 12 KOs) isn’t a familiar name but he’s won five straight since he was knocked out by Taronze Washington in the fourth round in 2015, a loss he avenged in his next fight. He was also stopped by John Jackson in 2011 in the sixth round. The 28-year-old Leatherwood has been active, boxing four times in 2016.

Nor sure. Is there a way I can verify that like a website or some sort?
I don't even know but I know Floyd was doing that flaky shyt at one point.

In this case it can be another promoter on the card and his might be the lead. That's why I ask. If he has the license then that's great for him.
