De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Chavez Clash Will Unite The World

An all-Mexican super-fight could bring people together against a backdrop of strained US-Mexico relations, says Oscar De La Hoya.

Oscar De La Hoya believes boxing has the power to "unite the world" amid ongoing political tensions between the United States and Mexico.

Relations between the two countries have been fractured since Donald Trump vowed to build a wall along the US-Mexico border during his presidential campaign, indicating Mexico would be made to foot the bill.

Trump has made moves to follow through on that promise since taking office and in January signed an executive order that sought to trigger the barrier's construction.

Six-weight world champion De La Hoya – founder of Golden Boy Promotions and holder of dual American and Mexican citizenship – has been on the promotion trail ahead of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's May 6 clash with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in recent weeks.

That all-Mexican super-fight takes place on American soil in Las Vegas, where countless Mexican boxers – including Chavez's legendary father – have come to the attention of a global audience.

And De La Hoya hopes this showcase of Mexican talent, set against the stormy political backdrop, can help build bridges rather than walls.

Speaking to Omnisport, De La Hoya said: "This fight is going to be a great one because for that one hour on May 6 when they step inside the ring to fight, it's going to unite the world, it's going to unite everyone, and they're going to be entertained by two Mexican warriors duking it out.

"The fight fans are going to be excited and thrilled. I'm excited by that because our great sport of boxing can unite the world.

"We're always looking to put the best fighters against the best and that's exactly what boxing is; it's a sport that unites all races, colours, religions and whatever you want to call it.

"You go back to the old days, you go back to when boxing started… the world paralyses when you have the best fighting against the best. This is why I love this sport.

"I've seen the most humble person in an arena watching a fight sitting next to the richest man in the world, Warren Buffett.

"That's what boxing is; it unites everyone for that split second."

Despite preaching a message of unity in the build-up, De La Hoya concedes Canelo and Chavez "really genuinely do not like each other" and says the personal stakes are high.

"Imagine, the loser has to go back and face his countrymen," the 44-year-old added. "That's going to be a tough task for whoever loses.

"I believe that both guys are going to be in tip-top shape, they're going to do the best they can and, most importantly, fight fans are going to enjoy this fight very much."

"I believe that I have the tools to win this fight and I'm coming to show the world that me and my Jamaican countrymen belong on this big stage," said Russell. "I'm ready to step up to this challenge and make my country proud. This has been one of the best training camps I've had and I'm looking forward to this opportunity. I only want to fight the best and I'm ready to prove it on March 14."

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, start at $20, and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at the Fitz Gift Shop, at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000.

His 2016 saw him earn a TKO victory over Mike Guy in March before stopping former champion Sam Soliman in the second round of a world title eliminator in July. The unbeaten fighter defeated a slew of experienced contenders in 2015 with wins over Elvin Ayala, Alan Campa, Vladine Biosse and a thrilling third-round stoppage of Jessie Nicklow.

Representing Jamaica, Russell enters this bout unbeaten since turning pro in 2013. The 27-year-old made his name in his home country by winning the Jamaican version of The Contender in 2015 with a stoppage of Richard Holmes. Russell picked up two more victories in 2016, including a second round knockout of Henry Mercer in his U.S. debut in October.

A native of Cairo, Egypt now residing in Miami, the 26-year-old Elbiali had success in three TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAY appearances over the last two years. Those three contests saw him score a first round knockout of Fabiano Pena and eight-round unanimous decisions over Mariano Hilario and Andrew Hernandez.

An unbeaten prospect fight at home in Cincinnati, the "Quiet Assassin" Clark picked up two victories in 2016 over increasingly quality competition as he stopped Elvin Perez in six rounds and earned a unanimous decision over Edgar Ortega. The 22-year-old last fought in his hometown in 2015 when he recorded a second round TKO of Joe Wilson Jr.

Golovkin: I Respect Chavez Jr. More, Canelo Gave Me His Belt!

By Miguel Rivera

IBF, WBC, WBA, IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) is hoping Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will grab an upset victory over Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 6th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Golovkin admits that he believes Chavez Jr. will shave off too much weight and come in drained, which will lead to a decision loss to Canelo. There is a catch-weight in place of 164.5-pounds. Chavez has not weighed below 167.5-pounds since 2012, when he fought Sergio Martinez at middleweight.

Should Canelo win, and Golovkin defeat his mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs on March 18th at Madison Square Garden, there is a possibility of them facing each other in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Golovkin says that he has a lot more respect for Chavez Jr., because of their past actions with world titles.

When Chavez Jr. was the WBC middleweight champion, he went forward with his mandatory challenger, who was Sergio Martinez, and lost the title over the twelve round distance. When Canelo was the WBC champion last year, he was ordered to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin. After promising on national television to make that defense, Canelo vacated his title and dropped down to 154. By default, the World Boxing Council named Golovkin as their new world champion.

"I respect more Chavez Jr. - because Canelo show me his face... too much talking.. too much you know. He gave me [his] belt... his WBC belt. Chavez.. he never like that. If you want belt, [Chavez Jr. says] please fight [me]... I don't give my belt," Golovkin told A Los Golpes.

"I want... [I'm] serious... Julio Jr. [to win], but I think this time he maybe.. lose too much weight for him. Canelo is going to 164 and he will be more fresh, more speed, more power. I think on points Canelo [will win]. But in my heart I want Chavez [to win]."

Nooooooo, this is not good :mjcry:

Please don't let #FelixFederation be over before it even started :to:

Nothing wrong with that. Props to him. Boxing really is 90% mental.

I remember froch-groves 1 when groves really got under Carl's skin and Carl performed horribly despite winning in the first fight. So he hired a sports psychologist and the difference was night and day.

If you want to see a fighter lose a fight before stepping in the ring in real time watch this.

Groves couldn't get under carls skin and froch destroyed him mentally in this very interview. Groves crumbled and broke here.

That's just an example of mental warfare. But again props to Felix.

Most people who get into boxing and actually competing ain't all there in the first place. They are coming from a certain struggle and they using boxing to escape that. But their problems catch up with them eventually despite their success in the sport. Particularly in boxing there's just too many examples of this.

Speaking from a personal experience I was no professional boxer but I was around pros and had my own little amateur career with some local titles. I got into boxing because my mind was all fukked up. Despite the success I was having boxing wasn't the answer to my problems and my life outside the gym was a mess. It all caught up to me very quick

You can't rely on outside experiences to fix issues that are in your head. It's better to go directly to the issues at hand than to lock them away and expect becoming a world champion or a professional boxer is going to fix anything. This isn't just boxing really but for anything in life.

So salute Felix for doing this early in the game.
