Nonito Donaire a Free Agent, Parts Ways With Top Rank

By Steve Kim

After a long and successful association with Top Rank, former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire has parted ways with the company.

Donaire initially signed with Top Rank in 2008 after parting ways with promoter Gary Shaw. He nearly left the company in 2011 after signing a deal with Golden Boy Promotions, which caused a minor legal battle as Top Rank proved he was still contractual tied to their company. They eventually reconciled later that year. Donaire signed an extension with Top Rank in 2015.

"Nonito is a free agent, right now," confirmed Rachel, his wife confirmed to BoxingScene.com. "We're no longer under a promotional contract with Top Rank."

As for what the future holds, Ms. Donaire explained - ''Nonito still want to continue his career. We still have an amicable relationship with Top Rank. We're free to come back at anytime. Of course with (Oscar) Valdez there that's certainly an option, especially when Nonito tests the waters again at 126. As everyone knows Nonito couldn't make the March fight that Top Rank wanted to with Valdez. It was too close, we were told in January about that fight."

Donaire, who lost his WBO 122-pound belt to Jessie Magdaleno on November 5th in Las Vegas was hoping for a rematch. But Valdez and Magdaleno are now on an April 22nd card at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

"So what we ended up doing is telling them is, 'Hey, maybe lets re-visit this later on down the road.' It wouldn't have worked anyway because Valdez has the mandatory (versus Miguel Marriaga). Our other option was Magdaleno who decided to fight the number twelve contender (Adeilson Dos Santos)," Rachel said.

The 34-year old Donaire currently has a record of 37-4 with 24 stoppages.

I had Keith Thurman winning 117-111, 9 rounds to 3, over Danny Garcia.

I gave Garcia rounds 2, 6, and 10.

The thing about the fight though is that the fight was closer than my card, or score, shows. There were a lot of rounds which were very tight and either Thurman edged it with 1 big clean punch, or Swift did, and that's why I believe it's worthy of a rematch.

It wasn't a domination, just a clear, but close victory for Thurman. A little wider than the porter fight, but just as competitive imo.

A rematch is definitely welcomed from me, because a few minor things could flip the scorecard in Swift's favor. I can see Swift beating Thurman too, just like LSC did in the rematch vs Frampton.

Truthfully I thought the Porter fight was more competitive. Swift could move his hands more in a rematch but that would open himself up to get countered with some bricks & I don't know if he trusts his chin as much as Porter did

DeGale Reflects on Yildirim Sparring, Eubank Jr. Bout Unlikely
By Danny Alvarez
In the aftermath of a see-saw battle with Badou Jack, word leaked that James DeGale’s gruesome teeth injuries didn’t really come as a result of his battle with Jack in their modern classic battle for super middleweight supremacy.
Instead -- DeGale confirmed to IFL TV -- that the injuries that had DeGale looking like a Halloween ghoul came from an apocalyptic sparring session at Muhammad Ali’s old stomping grounds at the 5th Street Gym in South Beach.
“In Miami, I boxed this mad Turkish guy [Avni “Mr. Robot” Yildirim], he came out to kill me,” DeGale said, confirming the leaked reports. “He’s unbeaten, ranked number two in the WBC, he got in there to kill me. Done in my teeth.”

Yildirim, the WBC mandatory, recently fought in Milano in a stay-busy fight, crushing Alexander Sushchyts (21-3) in a one-round demolition. Should Yildirim win the WBC strap, the two training buddies could collide in a unification fight down the road.
According to DeGale, who was sporting a brand new smile, the pair boxed for three hard-fought rounds, which was enough to shatter the Brit’s gums and put a dent in his vanity, and his pride.
“So I went to the dentist, got them sewn back in,” he added, which got him ready for the Jack unification bout. “And in the 7th round, he hit me with a hook-uppercut, licked off my teeth. I said, ‘Oh, god.’ Because I'm vain.”
Now back in the UK, with a fresh smile and his IBF title, he’s looking to get back in the ring two more times this year with some monster fights in the UK on the horizon, promoter Eddie Hearn said.
“He’s at the stage of his career right now, no bullsh*t,” Hearn said. “Date. Money. Again. Date. Money. Again. He’s got pay-per-view dates available to him for the big fights.”
Hearn said there had been preliminary talks with the Chris Eubank camp, but a deal hit an impasse when the Eubanks asked for the lion’s share of the proceeds.
“That could be a big, big fight,” Hearn said. “But he ain’t got time for time wasters.
“He’s coming up to the stage where he wants, four-five, six fights, no pull-outs, sign the contract, set the date, it’s 100 percent happening, thank you very much, on to the next one.
“People like Chris Eubank make George Groves look like a saint to negotiate with. George Groves used to be the most painful man to do a deal with. Now it’s Chris Eubank Jr. It’s still a little bit close.”
The Eubanks are a nightmare to deal with

shyt I honestly think Terence can put his foot in Keith's and Swift's ass now...that boy is mean lol

He might be able to outbox Swift but I don't think he's physically strong enough to take on the top dogs at 47. I think he gets stretched by Thurman
