In a clash for the IBF North American heavyweight title, Tomasz Adamek (47-2, 28 KOs) scored a thrilling fifth round TKO over Travis Walker (39-8-1, 31 KOs) on Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Both fighters were down in a wild round two. Walker floored Adaek early with a right hand and battered Adamek for much of the round but Ademek connected with a right of his own to floor Walker at the end of the round. The bout ended when a barrage of unanswered Adamek punches prompted a referees stoppage in round five. Time was 1:08.
In his heavyweight debut, former cruiserweight title-holder Steve Cunningham won a workman-like 10-round unanimous decision against heavyweight veteran Jason Gavern. Scores were 100-90 (twice) and 99-90 all for Cunningham. There were no knockdowns, although Cunningham appeared to stun his opponent on occasion. With the win, Cunningham breaks a two-fight losing streak to move to 25-4 with 12 KO wins. Gavern falls to 21-11-4 with 10 KOs.
Undefeated heavyweight Bryant Jennings continued to impress, blowing out Chris Koval in just 35 seconds. Koval was down on a left and then seconds later on a right before the bout was called off. Jennings is now 15-0 with six knockouts, Koval now has double digit losses for an overall record of 25-10, 18 KOs
