Broner vs. Granados Showtime Event Lands at Xavier University
By Jake Donovan
A matchup between Adrien Broner and Adrian Granados has been in queue for the past several weeks, but in that time span has seen changes in its rumored undercard, location and fight date.
Full details of the show have finally been nailed down, the latest piece of the puzzle coming in the form of a hosting venue. The February 18 Showtime-televised event will take place at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, as confirmed by event handlers on Monday afternoon.
Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) will end a 10-month layoff in the main event against Granados (18-4-2, 12 KOs). The former four-division titlist will fight for the first time since stopping England’s Ashley Theophane (40-7-1, 11 KOs) in the ninth round of their April 1 fight in Washington, D.C.
The rest of his 2016 was spent wading through a lengthy legal battle with all charges eventually dropped amid accusations of pre-dawn assault and robbery at a Cincinnati bowling alley around this time one year ago.
It wasn’t all bad news for the troubled boxer in 2016, however. His About Billions promotional stable added two new world champions – training stablemates Robert Easter Jr. (lightweight) and Rau’Shee Warren (bantamweight), both of whom will make the first defenses of their respective title reigns one week prior on a Bounce TV card in Toledo, Ohio.
About Billions will serve as the lead promoter for both shows, with the February 18 show in association with Mayweather Promotions. Company founder Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be on hand for a press conference on site to formally announce the event Tuesday.
Original plans called for the event to take place February 4, with hopes of US Bank Arena once again playing host. Broner has headlined at that venue on four separate occasions, including his winning titles at super featherweight (KO3 Vincente Rodriguez, Nov. ’11) and super lightweight (KO12 Khabib Allakhverdiev, Oct. ’15).
However, an inability to line up the venue, date and network prompted a change in the prior two aspects. The show was pushed back two weeks and now to a new part of town in Cincinnati.
Granados, of Cicero, Illinois, upset then-unbeaten Amir Imam (19-1, 16 KOs), of Albany, New York, in the ninth round of their November 2015 fight in Quebec City. He has since added a stay-busy win over Ariel Vasquez last July while awaiting such an opportunity to come to surface.
As previously revealed on BoxingScene.com, the evening’s co-feature pits veteran contender Thomas Williams and unbeaten prospect Marcus Browne in a light heavyweight crossroads bout.
Williams (20-2, 14 KOs), 29, Fort Washington, Maryland, will fight for the first time since suffering a knockout loss versus World light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson in his first world title bid last July in Quebec City, Canada. Williams went after Canada’s Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) in their Spike main event from Videotron Center, but paid a heavy price for his bravery as he went out on his shield in giving Stevenson his seventh successful title defense.
That very level of courage is what landed him the title shot. Williams went toe-to-toe with Edwin Rodriguez, outslugging the fellow veteran light heavyweight contender en route to a 2nd round knockout in their non-stop shootout last April live on Fox in prime time.
Browne (18-0, 13 KOs), a 2012 Olympian from Staten Island, New York, will end a 10-month layoffs since his taste of primetime exposure, but didn't exactly leave a lasting impression.
The 26-year old southpaw was considered fortunate to have prevailed in a controversial eight-round split decision win over then-unbeaten Radivoje Kalajdzic (22-1, 15 KOs) in their April 16 NBC-televised clash at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Browne scored a 1st round knockdown against Kalajdzic, but had to survive trouble later in that eight-rounder, including a sixth-round knockdown.
