On This Day: Julio Cesar Chavez lost his incredible unbeaten record

Julio Cesar Chavez lost to a challenger who simply refused to crumble

THE MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas has hosted more big boxing shows than any other venue over the last two decades, yet 23 years ago it was a brand-new arena.
It’s first show, set for January 29, 1994, saw Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez defend his WBC super-lightweight title against American Frankie Randall, and Claude Abrams previewed the bill.

Claude wrote that Chavez was continuing his quest “to retire undefeated in 100 fights”, having conceded just one draw in 91 outings by that stage. Randall represented the Mexican’s 24th world title fight across three weight divisions (130lbs, 135lbs, 140lbs) and his sixth WBC super-light defence.

Randall, while 32, was having his first world title fight, although we noted that the Tennessee puncher “has been largely avoided with noteworthy victories over world champions in Freddie Pendleton and Edwin Rosario.”
In picking Chavez to win, we said that although Frankie was on a winning run, “he does have vulnerabilities and has fallen apart before.”

Yet Randall would pull off a shock split decision victory, flooring Chavez on the way.
“We all knew it had to come to an end some time, but nobody thought it would be on this night and against this opponent” mused Daniel Herbert at ringside for us.

Randall, nicknamed ‘The Surgeon’, relieved Chavez of the WBC light-welterweight title, ending his undefeated streak at 90 (one draw), by taking a split, contested, but ultimately fair 12-round decision at the Grand Garden indoor arena of the newest glamorous hotel on the Strip.
It all hinged on an extraordinary 11th round. Chavez, who had a point deducted by referee Richard Steele for a low blow in the seventh, had another taken away for the same offence before being dropped flat on his back by a flush right hand on the point of the chin.

Chavez showed the heart of the champion he has been for a decade by getting back up and taking the fight to Randall, but then the damage had been done. Two judges scored the round 10-8 for the challenger and the third 10-7 – those extra points ulitmately cost the ‘Lion of Culiacán’ his precious crown.

“Richard Steele did me a lot of damage tonight” moaned the former champion through an interpreter. “I feel I won almost all the rounds. I respect Frankie Randall tremendously.”

“Chavez deserves a rematch” said the new champ. “He’s a great fighter. I was proud to be able to withstand what he dished out.”

Chavez would win a fortunate rematch just four months later when an accidental head butt, and the gash over his eye it caused, left the Mexican a split eighth round technical points winner over Randall at the same venue.
Chavez had looked the shadow of the once-magnificent fighter who terrorised opponents.

The pair would meet again some 10 years later, with Chavez winning their three-fight series when he outpointed Randall over 10 rounds in Mexico City.

The ref had more heart in the fighter than the trainer; seeing the ref pick up the towel musta gave that a power boost out the ass, like he still believes I have some fight, okayy.......People disregard the mental aspect of boxing too much

Update On Floyd-Conor

Since my negga told me " Conor was a good competitor and he proved himself", I knew Floyd was serious about the fight lol. You see how even his dad praising Conor. Funny enough, lawyers already reviewed Conor contract. There's no clause or amendments that prohibits him from fighting in another discipline like Boxing or wrestling. Only MMA competitions. Even Nate Diaz says he's gonna get himself a boxing license. Dana White is fukked. He fukked up big. You saw the grin on that negga Floyd face last night lol.

Interesting finding, breh :heh:

They gonna meet with more lawyers and Vegas people to make sure things go smooth and Dana can't do shyt. He and his lawyers did not properly write the contract and Conor is using a loophole. He may make 20-40 mil on that fight, he will happily retire or fight a few more known cats and make a good change. My dude said Conor and Floyd been talking a lot lately. Dana is probably aware of the loophole now and he's mad as fukk about it.

@Newzz works insurance and he can tell you, if you don't include certain exclusions or not have proper amendments, you are wide open for the taking.

Even Nate DIaz gonna apply for a boxing license too :dead:

Floyd fukked the UFC over pretty bad.

Worse part is Floyd and the boxing commissions sanctioning this shyt have more pull in Vegas than Dana.

Fight seems to be happening. Maybe on July 4th weekend or end of the year. Conor already made himself unavailable to fight.

AGain, I did not see his contract but my dude said UFC fukked up and the contract had plenty errors and omissions. He was throwing terms I know 0 about lol.

So, brace yourself for this foolery.

White Warns McGregor of 'Epic Fall' is He Tries To Go Around UFC - Boxing News

UFC President Dana White has fired a legal warning to company champion Conor McGregor. On Saturday night, McGregor - who is under an exclusive contract with the UFC - claimed that he was capable of getting around that agreement to take part in a boxing match with former division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Nobody is my boss. I know Floyd likes to say Dana [White] is my boss and this and he decides. Hell no. Nobody decides this. If they let people go fight jiu-jitsu tournaments, they can’t stop me going to fight a boxing fight. So obviously it’s smoother to do it all together, but look, everyone’s just got to know their place, and everyone does know their place.” MMA reporter Ariel Helwani. Mayweather retired in September 2015, after winning a twelve round decision over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He believes a fight with McGregor will actually happen, but not sure of when or where the fight will take place. "Most likely the fight between me and Conor McGregor will happen," Mayweather told Sky Sports in an exclusive interview. "I don't know (when it will be), I need to communicate with my team, the fight hasn't been made yet, but it is all about entertainment so hopefully we can make it happen." White, while speaking to reporters at the UFC on FOX 23 press conference in Denver, compared the chances of the fight happening to those of him dressing up for the Super Bowl as a member of the NFL's New England Patriots - and also warned of his legally binding contract with the UFC. “Here’s what I think the chances are: about the same as me being the backup quarterback for (Tom) Brady on Sunday,” White said. “When you’re about to go on and do a pay-per-view that you’re charging people $5 to listen to you talk, I’m sure you gotta say some pretty crazy sh*t." “If [McGregor] wants to go down that road with us [in a legal battle], it will be an epic fall.” -

So Dana definitely scared out here; talks must be getting serious.....

Compared to two weeks ago when Floyd said Conor wasn't on his level and now saying that the fight is possible, something has changed. And it seems more than likely that It's Dana.
