(LOS ANGELES, CALIF.) - Former two-time Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto (Winter Haven, Fla.) will undergo surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right shoulder on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Berto suffered the painful and debilitating injury in the second round of his July 27th bout with Jesus Soto Karass at the At&T Center in San Antonio, and was forced to endure the majority of the fight with one arm. Wednesday's surgery will repair the main supporting tendon of the rotator cuff in Berto's right shoulder.

"I threw a punch in the second round and when Soto Karass blocked it, my right upper arm connected with his and it felt like fire shot through my arm," Berto said. "I had no power at all in that right arm and couldn't hold it up to defend myself. I kept trying to use it, but midway through the fight, I realized I couldn't and just tried to work my left hand and throw jabs. I threw it instinctually in the heat of the battle later in the fight and yelled from the pain shooting through my arm. I could see that Soto Karass and the referee heard me, and the referee and doctor kept coming to the corner between rounds to check on the injury but there was no way I was going to quit."

The 29-year-old had to wait a week to allow the extensive swelling to resolve before undergoing an MRI to determine the extent of his injury. After conferring with two of the top orthopedic physicians in the field, he learned that surgery would be required immediately to repair the tear.

"Surgery is obviously never something that anyone wants to deal with, but adversity is nothing new to me," Berto said. "I know that Dr. ElAttrache is one of the best in the business so I am in good hands. I'm going to tackle this latest obstacle head on and I plan to be back in the ring full force in 2014. I really appreciate all the support that my fans have given me over the last few weeks and promise that you are going to see much more from me in the future."

Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who assisted Berto with his bicep injury in 2012, will perform the surgery on his right shoulder

Even if Adonis Stevenson doesn’t wind up winning 2013 Fighter of the Year honors, the light heavyweight king is still enjoying a year to remember.

Less than a week after taking part in a photo shoot and dinner honoring the new faces of HBO, Stevenson is now officially locked in for the first defense of his light heavyweight title. The knockout artist will meet former beltholder Tavoris Cloud on September at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

“Superman Returns is now official,” promoter Yvon Michel exclaimed once hearing the news that Cloud was finally on board. “Adonis Stevenson is facing Tavoris Cloud in Montreal, September 28 on HBO.”

Stevenson (20-1-1, 18KO) and his team were on board at the beginning of August but were just waiting on Cloud’s team to sign all documents to make the bout official.

Cloud’s side submitted their signed agreement to Michel’s GYM Promotions office on Monday. The bout will air live on HBO, giving the network major fights on its airwaves on six out of seven weekends through mid-November.

The bout marks Stevenson’s first defense of the lineal light heavyweight championship he won in emphatic fashion, knocking out Chad Dawson in just over a minute this past June in Montreal. Stevenson has scored knockouts in each of his past eight fights, including a 6th round stoppage of Darnell Boone to avenge his lone loss from three years ago.

Cloud (24-1, 19KO) fights for the first time since landing on the wrong side of history. The Floridian conceded his light heavyweight belt to Bernard Hopkins this past March. The feat made Hopkins, 48, the oldest fighter in boxing history to win a major title, breaking his own record set two years ago when he beat Jean Pascal to win the light heavyweight championship at age 46.

Hopkins lost the belt to Dawson in their April ’12 rematch, with Dawson giving up the crown to Stevenson in his lone defense.

Many expect the showdown with Cloud to become an instant hit and a Fight of the Year entrant, which speaks volumes to the risk Stevenson is taking in accepting the fight. The Haiti-born, Canada-based southpaw has already put ink to paper for a mandatory title defense against Tony Bellew, which has to take place before years end.

“We plan to keep Superman very busy, as you can see,” Michel modestly says of the risk.

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has suffered a small cut on his eyelid, likely from a sparring session, and needs at least three weeks to properly heal. As a result, Chavez will not be ready to face Brian Vera in an HBO televised fight on September 7th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Chavez has been training in his hometown of Culiacan under the supervision of Vladimir Baldenebro, Alex Ariza and his father, the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez.

Chavez's return has been pushed back several times. The young Mexican (46-1-1, 32KOs) has been inactive since last September when he suffered his first career defeat to Sergio Martinez.

There has been rumors that Chavez was having issues with weight in his training camp. The bout was initially going to take place at 160, then pushed to 165 and then bumped up to the super middleweight limit of 168.

The HBO televised co-feature was going to be a clash for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title between Vanes Martirosyan and Demetrius Andrade. That fight will get pushed back as well, but no word on where it is going to land.
