HBO needs to realize that it's time to put GGG in there with a recognizable name from America. Geale was a solid opponent, but only hardcore boxing fans knew who he was. At least Stevens was knocking dudes out for a nice lil run on NBC and calling GGG out for months. Geale didn't really bring any hype to the fight other than being GGG's best opponent to date.

The only thing GGG has more popular than Ward is his fighting style. Other than that their both around the same level of popularity with Ward being slightly ahead.

The ratings weren't bad, but they flopped in the sense of what they're trying to make GGG out to be which is some huge boxing superstar.

That is why I said that HBO was working so hard to create the aura of GGG as a legit star when he is just a guy that diehards pay attention to.
Wouldn't shock me if the majority of those viewers were for the heavyweight fight just like the bulk of the fans in MSG were.
HBO needs to get him in there with a name (not even a in his prime one honestly) just to create the right type of buzz around GGG if he gets a devastating KO.
Right now he is just some foreign guy with punching power and nothing else as a selling point to the boxing mass audience.

Ratings wise GGG is still one of HBO's more popular fighters. Most reasonable people know he hasnt reached the level of superstardom with fans, but either have most fighters.
GGG has built himself up about as much as he can until he fights another mainstream guy...guys who I believe are: JCC, Froch, Cotto, or Canelo. Personally dont believe Ward is in that class either. Both are popular among boxing fans, but dont have the mainstream popularity yet.
Take out Froch and add in Floyd and Manny and there really are just 5 guys who sell beyond just solid ratings for a Showtime or HBO non-PPV in the US.

GGG-Ward would be a huge fight for the die-hard, but underappreciated by the public.
Ward and GGG would want A side money, it would be an A side fight from both sides talent wise. The problem is I dont think it generates A side money.

GGG did 750k live against a better more known opponent with HBO hyping him (more subscribers) N at MSG

Then you got nikkas like fat Dan with the bu bu bu but add the DVR numbers...it was only 3 rds...peak was a Milly
