Officials in Manhattan and Chicago touted sharp drops in homicides in the first six months of 2025, compared to the same period last year.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Tuesday that homicides and shootings in the New York City borough both fell by more than 40% in the first half. He said there were 22 murders in Manhattan in the six months ending June 29, a 46% drop from 2023. Shootings fell 43%.
Chicago officials said that city’s 188 homicides in the first half of 2025 represented a 32% drop from last year and was the lowest number since 2014. They said there were 715 shootings this year to date, down 39% from last year.
In New York, a fall in murders and shootings could mean crime is a less dominant issue in the upcoming mayoral election than it was four years ago. Mayor Eric Adams, a former Democrat now running as an independent, campaigned heavily in 2021 on his past as a New York police captain. This year’s Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani, has focused more on high rents and other affordability issues.
Bragg, who is also facing voters in the fall, said the reduction in shootings was even more dramatic compared to four years ago, just before he took office. He claimed there had been a “historic” 70% drop in shootings since 2021.
“Combating gun violence remains a top priority for my office,” Bragg said in a statement. “From aggressive enforcement to strategic partnerships and targeted community investments, we are doing the work to drive down cycles of gun violence.”
Crime is falling nationally, according to Real Time Crime Index, which shows that violent crime has decreased to pre-pandemic levels. However data shows that, even when New York’s homicide rate spiked in 2020 and 2021, it was among the lowest for a large American city.
Citywide, major crimes like murder, rape, robbery and serious assaults are down 5.18% compared to statistics from Jan. 1 though July 13, 2024, according to the most recent figures released by the New York Police Department. Shootings were down 23.1% from this same period last year, according to the NYPD’s
CompStat data.
