We got some crazy rain this past summer.

I'm more surprised as how quickly the weather broke. Already had to break out my light jackets and windbreakers.

I'm moving back to the DMV after a 10 yr hiatus :wow:

Talk to me about Alexandria vs Silver Spring for bourgie black folk :pachaha:

Last time I lived in the area I lived in Arlington and loved it, best compromise for getting to my job in Tyson's and being close to the dope areas in DC, but I'm :old: and aint trying to be at the bars and clubs like I was when I was first there, just want some chill shyt to get into near where I live with occasional trips to DC proper. Since I'll be a remote employee, I want more space for my $$$ which has me looking at Alexandria and Silver Spring vs Arlington this time. I remember not liking MD suburbs (well mainly PG country burbs - PG county is wack :russ:, didn't hit MoCo at all so don't know about them) when I was out there last, but I never kicked in SS so I don't really know what it's like - someone give me the rundown on both cities (didn't go to Alexandria often either despite being in Arlington)

Also giving me pause on MD is higher income tax once you factor in stupid county taxes and possibly stricter gun laws?

Since you're working remotely a lot you might as well move further south around Lorton or Woodbridge.

I currently live in Alexandria but that's where I'm looking at right now once my lease is up.

The further you get from the city the cheaper it is.

no, I still want to be in places that are lively, dense/walkable and near the metro (I'm not looking to have a car), and close to DC.

i see Alex. and SS are bout about 20-something percent black - do you feel black folk in Alexandria went to DC (or other places) to socialize? How about SS ?
SS is more like 30% black and directly borders DC (majority black nieghborhoods). the majority of black people live in the western part of Alexandria which is more suburban and most likely not your vibe. also a big amount of tgem are Ethiopian who can be insular. living in SS gives you better access to Downtown Silver Spring (lots of stuff to do), and DC. SS has more black professionals and bougie folks as well.

just make sure you live close to the metro

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about PG county and what did you like about Arlington? Knowing that would make it easier to make a suggestion.

But regardless, I'm of the opinion that Silver Spring, specifically downtown Silver Spring or the areas just outside of it (basically everything still inside the beltway), is easily one of the best spots in the area. Plenty of black folks, easy to get to downtown DC Bmore and PG from here, not struggling to find parking anywhere, it's like a small city outside of the city.

All I know about Alexandria is old town Alexandria, I used to work out by there. Hella old white people and wack ass white/irish bars, but I'll admit I don't hang in VA too much so maybe someone else can speak on what Alexandria offers a little more than I can.

Folks in both cities go to DC to socialize but SS has far better logistics, it's not even comparable. From SS, you're 5 stops (15-20 mins) on the Metro from U-Street. And, if you don't feel like venturing out to DC, SS has pretty good nightlife in of itself. Depending on where in Alexandria you stay, you're at least 10 stops from U St. And Alexandria's nightlife is catered more for white people tbh. Great restaurants though.

SS is also better if you're not doing a car. It's smaller and far more urbanized than Alexandria. Only place in Alexandria that's as walker friendly is Old Town Alexandria right by the river.

SN: I never even knew Alexandria had that many black folks.

the areas to go out felt too strip mall/big chain. those burbs also remind me of some of the cities down south where you're in city limits but you got these country roads/streets with no sidewalks, hanging headlights, heavily forested, shyt just feels like living out back vs an urban area. like in oakland, even the residential areas feel "city", not in the sense of high rises, but there are concrete sidewalks, blocks/streets follow a grid, usually have coffee spot, liquor store, a few local spots to eat, etc within walking distance - arlington is similar IMO, especially from court house - va square. PG county has a lot of spots that are purely residential and you have to drive to get to simple shyt.

PG also felt like it was mostly locals, since I was a transplant, I liked DC/NoVA more since that's where most transplants live, and some of them was hood AF and I already admit I've gotten pretty bourgie in my old age :yeshrug: (edit - but that could be because we were all young and broke then so that's just where my friends/dudes i dated could afford to live)
