I’m moving back to the DMV after 12 years...I’m having the same dilemma. I can’t stand having to drive everywhere. My friends live in the Kingstowne area of Alexandria...it’s way too residential for me. I’m looking to move somewhere in the city....I need to be within walking distance of grocery stores, metro, etc. I feel cut off from the world otherwise.
DT SS and Hyattsville (along Rt1 corridor+PG Plaza). That busboys on Rt1 used to be jumpin precovid

As someone who grew up in the DC area in the 90s, i miss that pre-gentrified DC that was unapologetically black. I’m trying to move into the city limits to combat our declining numbers.

These cacs are making $$$ off our neighborhoods...they’re going street by street in Trinidad now. Row houses are $600-800 rn...in a few years they’ll easily be over a mil.
The cities ain’t ours no more man..I’m having the same issue with Oakland. This just isn’t the city I grew up in in the 90’s/00’s. The soullessness of gentrification :smh:

Woodbridge? :mjtf: Might as well move to Richmond. Hell naw.

:picard: hell na. You might as well just said move to Stafford or Fredericksburg

I was focusing on the fact that she said working remotely. Further south gets your cheaper rent and more space.

What, are those places aren't that terrible...are they?

yeah its a complicated layered topic thats pointless to go into anymore...I hear people all the time complaining about the gentrification who are actually contributing to the "problem" directly or indirectly....my bougie ass cousin is one of them always doing the most yet splits a 2400 rent with her bff at one of those modern apt buildings on h st thats just gonna get flipped in the future....

people just got to learn from the mistakes, prepare themselves and spread the knowledge to the next gen when the next wave or trend happens....

My man, if you're doing Woodbridge you might as well go stay in Richmond :pachaha:

See, gentrification is a two edged sword. Because I'm sure if you're a local who doesn't get displaced, you enjoy higher property value, economically improved neighborhoods etc. The issue is when the locals don't get to take part in the revitalization of their own neighborhoods.

I'm wondering though, with Covid and the rise of remote work, could we see a reverse migration of the gentry out of the city to the burbs

It just depends where you at in life. If you à breh just tryna raise your family and don't really care for the city no more it's fine.

If you young and single, still like to mingle from time to time in the city then them spots ain't it.

Live out in Stafford and nikkas gotta make make plans with you weeks in advance to give you enough time to make it up to the city:mjlol:

doing some googles; not surprising but Maryland has the lowest Black poverty rate in the United States, the DMV metro had the highest black household median income, and (still looking but I believe) the most educated Black population of any state.

Black household income is rising across the United States

Black households earn more in the Mid-Atlantic, but there is no simple explanation why | StatChat

Some positive news

Went to SS, MD just still feels so bama to me :pachaha:

Surprised myself, I decided on renting in DC proper,]. no point in paying for a luxury building to not get the real city views/feel. Being immersed amongst other apartment buildings, rooftop pools looking out on the capitol and monument :wow:

I'm moving back to the DMV after a 10 yr hiatus :wow:

Talk to me about Alexandria vs Silver Spring for bourgie black folk :pachaha:

Last time I lived in the area I lived in Arlington and loved it, best compromise for getting to my job in Tyson's and being close to the dope areas in DC, but I'm :old: and aint trying to be at the bars and clubs like I was when I was first there, just want some chill shyt to get into near where I live with occasional trips to DC proper. Since I'll be a remote employee, I want more space for my $$$ which has me looking at Alexandria and Silver Spring vs Arlington this time. I remember not liking MD suburbs (well mainly PG country burbs - PG county is wack :russ:, didn't hit MoCo at all so don't know about them) when I was out there last, but I never kicked in SS so I don't really know what it's like - someone give me the rundown on both cities (didn't go to Alexandria often either despite being in Arlington)

Also giving me pause on MD is higher income tax once you factor in stupid county taxes and possibly stricter gun laws?

I feel like you’ll enjoy living in Alexandria more since it’s more bougie Black folks there than Silver Spring. It’s bougie Black ppl in SS too but not as much as VA IMO but if you wanna be around a larger number of Black folks tho, I highly recommend SS over AVA. Plus, Alexandria’s nightlife is more chill and catered more towards folks in their mid 30’s to mid 50’s than Silver Spring. VA’s gun laws are way more loose than MD’s and DC’s, it’s why a lot of us just head down to VA or even NC to cop firearms at a reasonable price without having to go through bullshyt hurdles. Hell the way you talked about PG and the MD burbs, you’d fit right in over there in VA :mjlol:
