Melvin Lindsey Original Host of The Quiet Storm and Russ Parr Among 2021 Nominees for The Radio Hall of Fame - Urban Radio Nation | Hip-Hop R&B Black Radio DJ, Urban Media + Broadcast TV News
Well deserved. A lot of people don't know that the Quiet Storm radio format started right here on WHUR. It's nice to see Melvin Lindsey get his props.
:salute:

I remember that on WHUR. I forget if it was PGC or KYS that had a reggae set on the weekends. That shyt used to be fire. And this is years ago.

Shout out to Melvin though :salute:

I remember around the time The Quiet Storm first started. In fact, it only came on Sunday nights at first. I could have sworn the original theme song to The Quiet Storm was The Delfonics Theme (How Could You). But Wikipedia says it actually was Smokey Robinson's song "A Quiet Storm". But they're not always right. I know they use to play the extended version of that Delfonics Theme song in the background during dedications, when people would call in and dedicate their love to their lover. I remember when you got your first girlfriend, you'd tune in after 7:00pm during the Quiet Storm, and rap to your girl on the phone with the love music playing in the background. Then if you ran out of rap, you had a slow song to talk about...lol.

But my best memories of WHUR was a little later during the 80's, when they would play slow songs every late Saturday night until 7:00am Sunday morning. I think Melvin Lindsey hosted that too, even though it was Saturday night. I learned later that they were really playing a tape through those Saturday night editions, so nobody had to be in the studio. If I wasn't at a club, I was either recording some of those slow songs on my tape player, or I was laid up all night with a girlfriend, listening to this late Saturday night edition. If an extra nice slow song came on in the middle of the night, the song would make your girl hug you a little tighter in her sleep...and it would be right at your favorite part of the song :francis: . A few years later, they replaced that Saturday night edition with all reggae. I don't think that late Saturday night slow song edition ever returned.

Another station that use to role with nice slow songs all Saturday night during this time in the 80's was 1450 AM WOL, the original soul station of DC. Although their all Saturday night slow song edition came later, I think theirs was better than WHUR's imo. It was hosted by Michael Kelsey, a son of the general manger Jim Kelsey. My oldest brother was engaged to Jim Kelsey's oldest daughter when they attended the University of MD together. Anyway, with WOL being an AM channel, people in the suburbs who lived too far over the DC line couldn't get that WOL late Saturday night slow song edition, because the radio signal would start to weaken around 7 or 8 pm. I didn't know this until my family moved out to the Bowie/Mitchellville/Largo area. I had no idea Palmer Park couldn't get WOL overnight like we could in our part of PG. And Palmer Park was one of the big hoods in PG.

I didn't know it was that bad out there on the Eastern Shore until recently...but I should have. I could always feel a difference when I went too far north or east of PG County. I use to meet a lot of people from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore when I was going to the University of Maryland College Park. That must of been their better side.

Census data is out.

Gentrification done did a number on DC. Meanwhile Charles County, Howard County and MoCo have had a significant increase in their black populations. AA County surprised me as well with Black growth. PG County also saw an increase of their Latino population.

@Sankofa Alwayz thinking of moving to either dc, pg county, or mo county wtw

Boston pissing me off and New York too expensive
I’ll speak for MoCo.

Depends how close you want to be to the city. If you need to be close, it’s gon cost you plenty. If you got it like that, then I suggest Silver Spring. it’s the most poppin city in the county. If you don’t need to be close and don’t need the nightlife, then I suggest Germantown/Gaithersburg, where they’re building neighborhoods 24/7. All these spots I named are diverse as shyt, you won’t struggle finding black folk
