In regards to the “equity” thing, I think the disconnect that lot of people have is thinking equity=some form of ownership.

Having equity in something doesn’t mean you are involved in the operation or decision making.

Rory posted on Reddit that him and Mal have equity and receive a percentage of the revenue from the pod. That can be true and still mean Joe has final say and does all the negotiations when it comes to deals, offers and sponsors which as you pointed out is the case.

Spotify wasn’t negotiating with Rory or Mal, it was with Joe & Ian. Joe would just come back and tell them what happened.
