His point is that nore and others could have treated the people involved in those podcast as employees like joe does. He didn't have to give Dj Effn a say in anything, but he did in good faith as friends and they probably have a better working relationship than anyone joe works with.

And you can literally go back and listen to how the chemistry started falling off around that time. Mal became uninterested, constantly on his phone and Rory's heart suddenly wasn't in building a network after breaking his back helping Joe build the podcast for 3 years with no pay.
