My read on the situation is that Joe didn't rob them according to the contract, but more fukked them by signing them to a bad deal that they thought meant one thing when in reality it fukked them out of some paper they thought they should getting. That's the only thing that makes sense as to why Rory and Mal wouldn't sue Joe to open the books.

It really stems from them thinking he was shopping the pod , when he turned that offer down without informing them he was shopping the jbn which wasn't really a network yet

I think that was a big part of the fall out too. I'm just more referring to Joe flipping out in regards to accounting and why Rory and Mal not suing to force him to open the books to see if he was really hiding money from them.
