From my understanding, women hate being referred to as a female because it's dehumanizing. A female can be a deer/cat/dog/turtle etc, basically any other thing with a vagina. Doesnt really have anything to do with mostly negative of it because if it's a negative thing, even if you switch out the word female, it would still be a negative generalization. For example if I say "All females are trash drivers", substituting women in that sentence would still be a problematic sentence for people.

You're right, and so am I. Folks also use female a lot when generalizing the actions of women. It's often used in a condescending fashion...
