Next on the intel docket is
Domani Jackson. Getting the nation’s no. 2 corner to the game was
CRUCIAL to Michigan’s chances in this race. That’s even clearer now after speaking with him. It’s my
OPINION that he had all but decided to go to Alabama prior to last weekend’s trip to Ann Arbor. To be clear, he didn’t say that explicitly, which is why I framed that statement as an opinion. However, one thing he did say explicitly was he didn’t think Michigan would beat Ohio State. He admitted to being surprised by the outcome (as you’ll see in the upcoming joint interview piece with him and Will Johnson later today). I think Domani saw last weekend’s visit as a chance to take in the rivalry he has been following his entire life, and as an opportunity to confirm Bama is the right business decision. But then Michigan won, and he bore witness to it with his entire family (mom, dad, and sister), and his good friend Will Johnson. I think seeing Michigan compete at a championship level suddenly made him question whether it could be the best decision according to his heart
and his head. And as Johnson said plainly during the interview, there isn’t any more Michigan can do to help Domani sort that out.
“It's not too much for me to say now,” said Johnson. “I mean, we showed it on the field. He came up here and seen the atmosphere, and we've got the relationship. Obviously, I feel like we can be the best two corners in the country and shut down the field. So that’s really all (that can be said or done) now.”
How set was Domani in his thinking that the winning and development opportunity at Bama is
MUCH better than it is at Michigan? That, in my OPINION is what this boils down to now. Because his heart strings were definitely tugged last weekend. He shared how he felt like maybe he was being sent a sign that he was supposed to be in Ann Arbor. But then he seemed to wonder if that was his heart talking again. That’s what led him to commit to Michigan last November, and then USC last January. That’s what he’ll spend these next couple of weeks sorting out unless things suddenly get clearer before that.
Stay tuned for much more from Jackson and Johnson in the hours to come.
