ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The sixth stop on the annual bus tour had us in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to check out Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines. -

I got a chance to see Harbaugh’s much-talked about freshman class, led by defensive tackle Rashan Gary, who certainly looks the part.

All eyes will be on the quarterback spot for the Wolverines, and I got a front row seat to see John O’Korn, Wilton Speight and Shane Morris compete.

Check out some of my fun takes from Monday’s Michigan football practice.

Most impressive player: We didn’t see much of Jabrill Peppers. But we did see TE Jake Butt. And, he looks poised for an All-American season. No doubt, Butt will be a security blanket for the new QB.

Top specimen: At 6-6, 302, DE Chris Wormley is a beast who can play inside or outside. He is a walking Coke machine.

Impressive newcomer: DE Rashan Gary arrived in town as the No. 1 recruit in America according to scouting services. He looks the part, showing a burst off the edge. He could be a monster for this uber-talented defensive line.

On the rise: Wilton Speight. The 6-6, 243-pound junior QB looked good for most of practice, showing just enough niftiness with his feet along with a strong arm.

Best drill: Wideouts were forced to sprint five yards, pick up a tennis ball, cut to the right and catch a ball. The ultimate test of dexterity and focus.

Nagging question: Are the linebackers up to par?

Under the radar: WR Grant Perry. The 6-0, 196-pound sophomore is a good route runner who shows nice hands. He may be the No. 3 option at receiver for Michigan. Also, under the radar: WR Maurice Ways.

Number: 6, Big Ten wins for Michigan in 2015. That equaled the amount the Wolverines had in 2013 and 2014 combined.

NOTES

New defensive coordinator/LB coach Don Brown is called “Dr. Blitz.” So, you know this is gonna be a fun defense to watch. The former Boston College DC led the Eagles to the best defense statistically in the nation a year ago. He was an active coach on this day and has a LB unit with some potential. I like freshman Devin Bush.

All eyes are on the QB spot, just like last season. There isn’t a lot of experience on the depth chart. But Houston transfer John O’Korn has starting experience. He is battling Wilton Speight and Shane Morris with O’Korn and Speight leading the way. In the end, I wouldn’t be shocked if Speight lands the job. He’s a steady force who looked good last year when forced into action. He moves well for a 6-6, 243-pound QB and he throws well. Speight just may be the guy when it’s all said and done.

Who will be the third WR? It’s a battle between Grant Perry and Drake Harris. Both are very talented for a unit that will rank among the best in the Big Ten.

The staff was working out offensive lineman Michael Onwenu at defensive tackle. The guy is a load at 350 pounds and would make the front even better on defense.

Keep an eye on true freshman RB Kingston Davis. He is a 6-1, 245-pound load who is the type of big, physical back that Jim Harbaugh likes. The problem: Can he get reps with De’Veon Smith, Drake Johnson and Ty Isaac ahead of him?

The three fastest players on the team? They are WR Jehu Chesson, CB Jourdan Lewis and LB Jabrill Peppers.

Whoever wins the QB job will have a multitude of weapons to throw to headed by 2015 Big Ten Tight End of the Year Jake Butt along with wideouts Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh. Each player had more than 50 catches last season. They joined Indiana and Florida State as the only teams to return three players who had 50 or more catches from 2015.

More juice is needed from the ground game. I am not sure holdovers De’Veon Smith, Drake Johnson and Ty Isaac can provide it. The Wolverines haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Denard Robinson in 2012. The last Michigan running back to run for 1,000 yards was Fitz Toussaint in 2011. Maybe a true freshman can help.

The secondary looks strong led by corner Jourdan Lewis. He lacks size but has savvy, instincts and confidence. He broke up or intercepted 22 passes last season, which was the fourth most in the nation. He will team with Channing Stribling to form a nice secondary. And safeties Dymonte Thomas and Delano Hill are good seniors.

Jourdan Lewis and Jabrill Peppers figure to each play some offense this year, injecting some playmaking skills into the unit.

Fullback is a key position on this team. And, there is a battle between Henry Poggi, Khalid Hill and Bobby Henderson.

Yes, there was a lot of attrition at linebacker, but I’m not worried. The time is now for Ben Gedeon and Mike McCray. And Jabrill Peppers is in a spot where he really can thrive. True freshman Devin Bush may end up crashing the starting lineup. And I love Noah Furbush, a rangy athlete.

Left tackle Grant Newsome is just a sophomore. Mason Cole looks good at center after moving from left tackle. Kyle Kalis and Ben Braden are road graders at guard. Erik Magnuson is a strong right tackle. The key: Newsome. Can he hold up at the most key spot on the line?

This d-line may live up to its massive hype. When Ryan Glasgow went out with injury last season, the defense slipped. Well, he’s back. As is massive tackle Bryan Mone, who missed 2015 with injury, along with Maurice Hurst. And true freshman Rashan Gary looks like the real deal at end as does fellow true frosh Carlo Kemp. Chris Wormley and Taco Charlton are formidable veterans.

Versatile Michigan freshman Chris Evans turns heads with speed, elusiveness

ANN ARBOR -- Jim Harbaugh loves players who can do more than one thing.

Chess pieces. Athletes who can be positioned at different spots on the field to confuse defenses and give Michigan an advantage in a unique way.

In his short time at Michigan, he's already found a few. Jabrill Peppers has played just about everything but bus driver. Jourdan Lewis might have a shot at playing both ways this season. Mason Cole, Harbaugh believes, can play all five spots along the offensive line.

Harbaugh's latest chess piece, though, appears to be freshman Chris Evans.

A player without a defined position, the 5-foot-11, 200-pounder from Indianapolis was recruited as a player who could line up at running back, wide receiver or even -- if necessary -- defensive back.

Through a week and a half of fall camp, Evans has spent his time on offense -- mainly coming out of the backfield. But his ability to absorb information, make defenders miss and turn short plays into long gains also has him seeing time at receiver -- and turning heads just about everywhere along the way.

"He brings a lot. Chris Evans, he's an impressive athlete," senior running back De'Veon Smith said. "I haven't seen anybody like him in a while. I'm going to be excited to see what he does this season.

"His explosiveness and his speed. I don't see why (they can't move him around), he's that good of an athlete. With any freshman it's hard to learn that first playbook ... and over the next few weeks he'll start to understand more and as the season goes on (he'll be fine)."

Evans comes to Michigan out of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, an extremely accomplished and advanced football program that used him in just about every capacity during his prep career.

As a junior, Evans rushed for more than 1,200 yards and 18 scores. He also caught 51 passes for 676 yards and 10 more touchdowns. As a senior, he rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 15 scores, while adding 40 catches for 511 yards and 4 scores.

He won state championships on the track. His personal best in the 100-meter dash was clocked at 10.9 seconds.

"We've got the guy who is real, real shifty. He's fast. You know he's fast but he's still deceptive," junior running back Ty Isaac said. "I still haven't figured that one out myself yet. But I think he's a great player.

"I think it's just like me, Drake (Johnson), De'Veon (Smith), Kingston (Davis), Kareem (Walker), Chris and Karan (Higdon) are different players and they're all good at what they do."

How many different ways can Michigan use a talent like Evans this season? Time will tell.

But if his development continues, the possibilities should increase.

A player with great hands, Evans can certainly line up in the slot and make an impact. He can catch the ball out of the backfield. He's gained strength, which means he can also carry the football. Michigan's core three at running back -- Smith, Johnson and Isaac -- features plenty of power, but not a ton of breakaway speed.

Evans apparently has that ability.

And, if Michigan were so inclined, Evans is the type of talent that could allow Michigan to incorporate more spread looks into its arsenal.

Asked if that's something Michigan's looking at, Smith responded by saying: "I could see that."

Harbaugh said earlier this week that Evans was one of his favorite players through the first week of camp.

And, apparently, the head coach isn't alone.

"He knows his stuff," Mason Cole said. "He knows his protection, he knows his route patterns and he's explosive. He can go out there and hit the hole and before you know it, he's down the field.

"It's good to see a freshman doing that."

Michigan Football: More Freshmen Impressing

Veterans will play the biggest role on this year’s Michigan team, but several freshmen will contribute. One, running back Chris Evans, might be the biggest surprise.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh singled Evans out as one who had impressed him most as of Monday … on Wednesday Evans’ teammates supported his statement.

“Athletic. Very athletic,” fifth-year senior Drake Johnson said.

“Explosive and very elusive, very fast,” senior De’Veon Smith added, noting Evans would be a great back down the road. ”We’ve only been in camp for 10 days now, but we’re going to see a little more out of him, see what he can do.”

He brings something to the team none of the others have, redshirt junior Ty Isaac added.

“We’ve got the guy who is real, real shifty. He’s fast,” he said. “You know he’s fast, but it’s still deceptive. I haven’t figured that one out for myself, but I think he’s a really good player.

“I think it’s just like me, Drake and De’Veon. Chris, Kingston Davis, Karan Higdon and Kareem Walker are all different and real good at what they do. They all are unique backs and make plays. With anything, you’ve got to learn the playbook. But they’re playing really well and are a good addition to the room.”

On defense, freshman end Rashan Gary is proving to be a load. Defensive coordinator Don Brown’s array of blitzes has given the backs plenty to concentrate on, and Smith has gone head to head with Gary more than once.

“[Senior end] Taco [Charlton] and Rashan are kind of like the same size. I try to get big with them,” Smith joked. “Rashan is a little kid … not a little kid, but still a teenager, so I’m not going to lose to any teenager.

“I’m very impressed with him. He is a tremendous athlete. From today to his senior year, it’s going to be scary what he turns into.”

A couple young receivers, Eddie McDoom and Nate Johnson, impressed Isaac, Johnson with his playmaking ability and McDoom with his ridiculous speed. Smith mentioned the receivers, as well, though he didn’t remember names.

The second team offensive line, including freshmen Ben Bredeson and Michael Onwenu, helped open holes when Smith ran with the twos today.

“He jumped offsides today,” Smith said matter of factly of Bredeson. “I was mad at him today because Coach [Jim Harbaugh] told us not to jump offsides. But learning the offense is so hard. You’ve got to know all they calls, all your landmarks. But those freshmen linemen are doing impressive things, moving the ball. I was impressed with way they pushed the two defense and made holes.”

It’s a fun group of guys, both Johnson and Smith agreed.

“My roommate, Chris Evans, is my roommate and I talked to him the first day of camp and said, Hey Chris, you ready for camp? He was like yeah dawg, I’m so ready. I was like, no you’re’ not. You think you’re ready but you’re not. Just give it a couple days. But all the freshmen are taking well. Definitely those first three days they were like what did I just get myself into? But they’re adjusting well now.”

“It’s a funny group of guys,” Smith added. “They tried to storm the locker room last night … we shut it down. I think it’s a close-knit group but they have to understand the process of actually being in camp. They have to get through their first football and class and study hall on top of that.

“But they’re impressive big, very big. I’m excited to see what they bring to the table.”

Smith said the young cornerbacks and linebackers had also been making plays, noting they were more than holding their own.

UM freshman Bredeson pushing to take Newsome’s job

Ann Arbor – Michigan’s football season begins in less than two weeks, and four of the starting five spots on the offensive line have been solidified.

But left tackle remains up for grabs.

Sophomore Grant Newsome had been penciled in to start at left tackle, but 6-foot-5, 310-pound freshman Ben Bredeson has been pushing him in practice. If Bredeson wins the job, he will be the second freshman to start at the position, with Mason Cole, now playing center, the first.

In June, Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno told reporters that if Michigan had a game that day, the starting five would include Newsome. With the freshmen in camp, Drevno no longer can be definitive.

“I don’t want to say, ‘Well, these are the starting five,’ because things could change,” Drevno said Monday. “We’ve got some good talented young freshmen, some second- or third-year veterans that are in there that have done a good job. Right now, Erik Magnuson is the right tackle, Kyle Kalis is the right guard, Mason is at center, Ben Braden at left guard and we’re battling it out here with the left tackle spot.”

Newsome hasn’t been able to solidify the spot because of the competition. Bredeson, from Arrowhead High in Hartland, Wisconsin, was ranked a four-star prospect and the No. 1 player in Wisconsin in the 2016 class by Scout.com.

“It’s been an unbelievable battle,” Drevno said. “As we recruit these kids and get more talent in this program, guys are really competing. It’s just not just the offensive line, it’s the quarterbacks, the receivers, the running backs, the defense. Everybody is competing and wanting to be the best. It’s a fight every day.”

Drevno is not concerned about handing over the left tackle spot to a freshman. Newsome is a sophomore, and has some game experience, so regardless, that position will be handled by a young player.

“It doesn’t worry me at all,” Drevno said. “There are things that could change here in the next couple of days, but you forge ahead and you keep working and you can never hold you back as a coach. You feel it in your gut, you know it’s right, you do it.”

Two things we've written about Bredeson multiple times on here since he committed to the staff last year: One, he's similar to Mason Cole in both skill and versatility. Two, his eventual emergence is/was pivotal for the Wolverines given the losses they incur on the offensive line next season.

Drevno mentioned Cole as a comparison for him as well on Monday. As we first reported, Bredeson began fall camp at left guard, but with the belief that he could possibly help them in a number of spots. The coaches had him practicing snaps in the spring and summer before he enrolled in case they decided they would need him in the middle at center. In short, they've put a lot of responsibility on him early on and from what we're told he's answered every test with flying colors.

After he officially signed in February, Bredeson approached the off-season as if he was going to not only play this fall, but start. He changed his diet completely around and took on a college-like training regimen to get him ready for enrollment and fall camp in June. Because of that, he hit the ground running in team lifts and immediately became a guy the coaches believed could play immediately.

One thing NOT to takeaway from Bredeson's quick rise is the play of Grant Newsome. Newsome has had a solid camp from everything we're told. It's more about Harbaugh's mantra of competition and the quick emergence of Bredeson more than it is poor play on Newsome's part. Michigan is excited that they've pretty much added another name to the offensive line fold quickly on in fall camp.

I know I am not very surprised with Bredeson's ability showing out early on. We compared him constantly to Cole for a reason.

I wish Bredeson would replace either Mags or Kalis on the right side:beli:

2 decommitments today
On Monday, Michigan suffered a pair of decommitments in 2017 Top100 defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon and 2018 four-star Leonard Taylor.

One is significant. The other is not. Neither should be viewed as a total surprise.

We can get Taylor's situation out of the way quickly: Michigan viewed him as a soft commitment at best for about the last three months or so. He's a very good player, and Michigan will likely still recruit him going forward, but with a very small class slated in 2018 and a decent group of defensive lineman on their board already (that's where I believe they think his future is), they will absorb this blow with ease in the long-term. Remember that a lot of stuff about recruiting is more perception than anything. Losing one of Ohio's best when they've put the effort in isn't great, but it's not as big a deal as it will be made out to be.

The Aubrey Solomon situation is clearly a bit different.

The odd thing about the reasoning behind his decommitment is that Michigan never had Solomon on their final or even prospective visitors' list for the BBQ event. For a recruiting department that has usually been spot on in everything they do, it would be a MAJOR snafu for someone to have mailed him a letter in the manner he reported he got one.

Michigan was banking on getting Solomon to campus twice this fall in hopes of getting him to enroll early and possibly see the field as a freshman. This obviously is a major blow to that opportunity. It also appears that mom was never really sold on Michigan from the beginning. It's hard not to see Georgia being the favorite going forward for that exact reason.

The once-quirky defensive tackle board in 2017 may end up rearing its ugly head again. Michigan has never felt good about their chances with Greg Rogers. They aren't any kind of factor for the Marvin Wilsons of the world either. They do believe they're right in it with Jay Tufele, and the visits are going to be vital in that regard. I stand by my opinion that he will really like what Michigan has to offer when he finally visits campus; presumably for an official this fall.

Other names to potentially watch: CA three-star Popo Aumavae and CA four-star Martin Andrus. Andrus reported he will take an official to Michigan on October 22nd, but we've been told in the past that they aren't really recruiting him. That may change with Solomon opening things back up.

Kinda figured about Solomon live up to expectations they'll come. The recruiting department been fukking up this past week first the false graphic now this letter:beli:

Solomon hurts. His mom was against his commitment from the beginning. Even though this dude came out and lied, and said that he talked it over with his mom (on the phone, while on campus) and she gave him her blessing. That turned out to be a lie.

Granted, he seems to be giving Michigan an official visit, so we'll just have to wait and see. I'm assuming his mom will make that trip with him.

That Taylor kids bytchmade. Literally two days after 'committing' to Michigan, he was rocking Buckeye gear. That's all he's been seen in since. He's taken countless numbers of visits to other school (repeated visits to Columbus) and hasn't even returned to Ann Arbor. The writings been on the wall with him too.

I'm not even remotely worried about recruiting with this staff. Not I the least bit.

Oh, and I'm ready. My body's ready. My minds ready. My souls ready. Every bit of me.. Is ready.
