Gary is expected to leave for Clemson tonight and return on Sunday, as his official visit would not begin until Friday morning (that's my understanding). As Gary said, he and his family are expected to sit down and make a final decision Sunday night before going radio silent with both reporters and coaches heading into Wednesday's announcement.
Our Clemson affiliate believes that the Tigers are a legitimate threat for Gary's services and rightfully so. He chose visiting them for a second time over seeing Alabama for a first time, which is somewhat telling in his potential interest in their program. Dabo Swinney and his staff have stayed in contact relatively consistently throughout the process as well, although the Tigers haven't really been mentioned in the same breath as Ole Miss, USC and some others that seemed to be bigger contenders to Michigan as of late.
Some important things to note, one of which will likely surprise many:
1. Most, myself included, believed that a visit to Alabama would pose a bigger threat to Michigan than a return visit to Clemson. I even posted that opinion this morning. However, I can confirm with certainty that Michigan was hoping Gary would visit Tuscaloosa this weekend and not return to Death Valley. They view Clemson as a bigger threat than Alabama. Part of this is because Alabama hasn't really recruited Gary that hard at all. They are Alabama, but the effort didn't look to be there for the bulk of the process.
2. There were some rumors that Michigan may have pushed Gary to verbally commit while he was on his unofficial last weekend. This is patently false. Michigan knows that not only is his decision going to be a family one, but any kind of push for a commitment almost certainly would have been looked down upon by Gary's mother. Michigan knows her; they have no intention of pissing her off this late in the process.
3. Depth chart type stuff is really kind of irrelevant across the board. This is something that both Clemson and Michigan could view as a positive on their end, as both should boast deep defensive lines next season, with Clemson's being slightly younger. Gary's decision could revolve more around the academic side of things, and it's been a primary focus of his recruitment for well over a year now. He's an elite prospect that will play no matter where he goes, so the other things will play a bigger role.
4. Gary's extended stay last weekend turned out to be a big positive for Michigan, as you'd expect. Extra time around the current players and getting to experience the day-to-day life as a student-athlete for such a prolonged period of time is something he didn't and won't get at any other program. If anything, it made him more and more comfortable with what life would be like in Ann Arbor.
Overall, the vibe is about what you'd expect at this juncture in a recruitment of this magnitude, considering the way it's played out. The feeling on Michigan's side is one of confidence, but they're also cognizant of another visit, and another school that poses a threat. My intuition tells me that we may see one or two Clemson predictions come in on the Crystal Ball around the end of the weekend if his visit goes well, and you'll also see more for Michigan as well. That being said, all intel points towards Michigan having built too big of a lead for Clemson, Ole Miss or any other program to overcome at this point, and the waiting game until next Wednesday will begin.
