On Saturday afternoon, Michigan reeled in a pair of commitments out of Leesburg (GA) Lee County in 2017 Top100 defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon and 2018 four-star safety/outside linebacker Otis Reese.

While Saturday morning we first reported that Michigan thought Reese was a potential commitment candidate, Solomon completely came out of nowhere. In fact, he had no listed offer from Michigan anywhere until we confirmed that he in fact did have an offer from the staff.

Instead of separate pieces for each prospect, I'm combining them here.

Solomon: The intel here is going to be limited not only because of what I listed above as far as him holding an offer, but because this escalated quickly as we reported throughout the day.

Kevin Pych, the Lee County assistant who was on the visit with the players told me that while Solomon's verbal was not expected heading into the weekend, it was something he could see taking place as the visit wore on during Saturday.

"I was as surprised as anyone," he said. "But Aubrey seemed to grasp what Michigan was selling from both a short and long-term standpoint. He really bonded well with the staff too. I think it's a great fit for him."

I mentioned on the CBSSports video I did that Michigan might be done at defensive tackle because Solomon is a no-doubt type of prospect. I don't necessarily think that's the case unless they truly believe he isn't going to look elsewhere.

Was this a surprise for Michigan? Yes. Was this a coup for Michigan? Absolutely. More on that later.

Reese: While we learned Saturday morning that Michigan was expecting Reese to verbally commit while on this visit, he was probably a Crystal Ball I should have made a little sooner in the process. The Wolverines have led for him throughout his recruitment and actually felt pretty good about him most of the time as well.

While Solomon is going to get a lot of the attention here, Reese is a massive verbal for Michigan in 2018 as well. He is the #1 player on Michigan's board in the cycle at Don Brown's SAM spot, and the staff offered him early on because they see his potential as sky high.

With Reese specifically, family is a big factor for him, and his brother is a redshirt freshman for Central Michigan. As he mentioned to Wolverine247 in an interview following his April offer, it is a real factor for him. Tych reiterated this as well.

"The family thing was big for Otis," he said. "Being able to play closer to his brother is something that stood out about Michigan immediately. Combine that with the fact that they made him a priority throughout the process and I think he wanted to be a Wolverine the entire time."

I've noted numerous times that recruits recruiting other recruits is an overrated thing as far as gathering commitments. However, it can at least pique the interest of people and help get them on campus to check things out. Look for Reese to work on some of his fellow Georgians.

MVP: This one isn't even a question as far as I'm concerned. When Michigan promoted Chris Partridge to linebackers coach after a year as the team's Director of Player Personnel, many outside of the program rolled their eyes as the Wolverines signed a former player of his in Rashan Gary after previously signing Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty.

Head coaches put their best recruiters in the toughest areas to recruit. Southern Georgia and Leesburg is one of Partridge's areas, and he was the driver behind both of these commitments.

In circles such as ours, where the day to day efforts of the coaching staff are noticed and highlighted, it's already known that Partridge is an aggressive and effective recruiter for the Michigan staff. However, these verbals prove that he's capable of beating some of the nation's best schools in one of the hardest areas to recruit in the country for a Midwest school like Michigan.

Thoughts/effect: The Aubrey Solomon verbal commitment might be the second biggest one of Jim Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan and in my opinion would challenge the Rashan Gary signing as maybe the most important.

While Gary is clearly the better prospect, Michigan had some ins with him with Partridge, Peppers and a strong New Jersey flavor to the staff's class in 2016. With Solomon, they had nothing in their favor. He was a recent offer who had never been onto campus. He is a top target for multiple SEC schools including Alabama and Georgia. He lives in an area where to my knowledge Michigan has never received a verbal commitment. The staff took those things and flipped them on their heads, reeling in Solomon with what was obviously a game-changing visit. He is a kid who has visited Auburn, Alabama and Georgia multiple times, but dropped on his first visit to Ann Arbor.

This also illustrates why the satellite camps are an effective tool for the Wolverines on the recruiting trail. Is Jim Harbaugh ever going to publicly say that they're about recruiting? No, and neither would any other coach in the country, so there's no need to hold him to a different standard than the others. What the camps have done is piqued interest in kids to want to learn more and potentially see Ann Arbor in person. Not all kids and their families can take the unofficial visits as Solomon was able to, and if they can't, the satellite camp serves as a bridge for the staff to build between a winter scholarship offer and a fall official visit.
Is this recruitment over? Of course it isn't. However, it serves notice that what Harbaugh and Michigan are doing on the recruiting trail is working, and it's working really well. Solomon is universally regarded as one of the south's top prospects, and to see him verbally commit on his first visit to campus is something other kids will absolutely take notice of. For that alone, it makes his pledge a big one for the Wolverines.

Notes
Solomon situation: Much has already been written about the recent verbal commitment of Leesburg (GA) Lee Country 2017 Top100 defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon and what it means for the staff and Michigan's perception on the recruiting trail.

As we've written, his recruitment is very likely not over. Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and a host of others are likely to continue to recruit Solomon hard until he signs and enrolls at whichever school he will choose.

What's Michigan's plan? I'm told the Wolverines have talked to his mother and were able to answer the questions she had regarding the program and the like. The staff is pushing hard for Solomon and his mother to come back up to Ann Arbor for the BBQ at the Big House event, which is reportedly going to be in early August.

After that, they will then push for a mid-season official visit, with Wisconsin and Penn State the two most likely games. To finish it off, we're hearing that Solomon is a potential candidate to enroll early and that Michigan is working with him to eventually get that done.

Next up at DT: I have officially moved Utah Top100 defensive tackle Jay Tufele to "Top Target" on our 247Sports Target page.

We're told that Tufele is "far and away" the defensive tackle Michigan would prefer to add alongside the aforementioned Solomon. Right now, there is some optimism in Michigan's camp that they can get it done. Despite the fact that he's from Pac-12 country in Utah, this could actually become a Michigan/Ohio State battle.

This will be an interesting recruitment for Michigan because of Tony Tuioti's impact on the Poly recruits. Michigan has Bryan Mone on the roster and signed Devin Asiasi last cycle. They're contenders for Popo Aumavae, Henry Bainivalu and Josh Falo among others this cycle.

Keep an eye on how Michigan does with Tufele. They may be able to get him up there this summer if he does head to the Midwest as he says he is planning to. I will call it a hunch, but I think he is someone who will vibe with what Michigan offers.

Dytarious Johnson: Johnson has officially enrolled at prep school in Alabama. He insinuated this via Twitter and we were able to confirm on Wednesday night that it's indeed the case.

This shouldn't come as a surprise, as he was the only member of the class not officially recognized at the Signing of the Stars event, and his grades situation was one we were aware of shortly after he verbally committed.

The question with him is whether or not he will ever become a Wolverine or will end up somewhere else. According to a couple people we've talked to, we're told that it will be an uphill battle for him to eventually be re-recruited by the Michigan staff, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will be the case.

Slaton: We continue to hear really positive things regarding Michigan and five-star offensive lineman Tedarrell Slaton. He's backed off of saying anything publicly, but with a strong visit to campus this weekend, there's growing confidence in the Wolverines' chances.

He's really close with Western Michigan sophomore basketball player and former teammate Drake Lamont. Nick Eubanks enrolls at Michigan today and the Wolverines are within striking distance for fellow teammate and top target Kai-Leon Herbert.

The polarization around Slaton as a prospect has become fascinating in my opinion. Some say he's the best guard in this cycle and that he has future pro written all over him. Others are taking his basketball talk seriously and wonder how much his heart is truly in the game. After spending an entire weekend in Ann Arbor, we're told Michigan is buying the former rather than the latter. Slaton is someone I am considering a 247Sports Crystal Ball for now.

Bits
- Killen (AL) Brooks School 2017 three-star linebacker Colin Anderson tried committing to the Michigan staff over the weekend and was told he'd have to wait if he wanted to be a part of the class. Michigan feels good about how they may finish at linebacker this cycle, so this is not a surprise. Anderson committed to Vanderbilt 48 hours later.

- We're not very bullish on Michigan's chances with Las Vegas (NV) Top100 defensive tackle Greg Rogers at this point. USC and Oklahoma appear to be the two programs with the best shot at him.

- Many believe Ohio State is the favorite for Top150 defensive tackle Darnell Ewell, but we're not convinced he is currently a take for them. It will be interesting to see how Michigan handles his situation, as many believe they are running second. Both schools prefer the aforementioned Tufele.

- Michigan is on the outside looking in for CT ATH CJ Holmes after a good visit to Notre Dame. We're not really sure where he would have fit in this class, but the Wolverines do like him as a player.

Solomon Tufele Gary Vilain D-line would be absolutely terrifying:wow:please let this happen

Tufele highlights:damn:USC chat Bartow said Michigan, BYU, and Oregon were the main schools for Tufele

Michigan redshirt junior quarterback John O'Korn continues to show why many believe he'll be U-M's starter this fall. O'Korn was one of 33 college quarterbacks who "put on a show" for more than 1,200 campers and their families during the main event of the 21st annual Manning Passing Academy.

HoumaToday.com reports O'Korn and Southern Mississippi’s Nick Mullens were crowned co-champions of the Papa John’s Air-it-Out and IBERIABANK Quarterback Challenge after neither could separate themselves after five rounds of competition at Nicholls State University's stadium.

Nico Collins named us his outright leader today him& DPJ on the outside:wow:got to have a big season this year

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville Top247 receiver Nico Collins maintained Michigan as his leader at The Opening Finals Wednesday afternoon, the first day quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends took the field at the Nike World Headquarters.

Other contenders include Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Florida State for the nation’s No. 13 receiver and No. 76 prospect overall per the 247Sports Composite.

“There is a lot of stuff about Michigan,” Collins said. “That’s an old-fashioned school, its tradition there, the academics, they care about you after football and what you plan to do after football. That and football plays a big role in that.”

Michigan is sitting on the nation’s No. 4 recruiting class per 247Sports with five-star quarterback Dylan McCaffrey one of the headliners.

“Having Dylan in my class at quarterback I know that’s somebody that can get me the ball,” Collins said. “The coaching staff, everything just felt right up there.”

“I never would have thought when I was younger Michigan in the North would be recruiting me but I’m just blessed and enjoying the process right now.”

McCaffrey and Collins are playing on the same 7-on-7 team in Oregon.

“That might be my quarterback for three to four years,” Collins said. “He wants me in there pretty bad and I’m kind of loving Michigan.”

Five-star receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones is also on the same team as Collins. Both are the Wolverines top two receiver targets.

“That’s a possibility,” Collins said of them landing in Ann Arbor together. “It’s up there, it could happen. It’s a crazy duo, who to check, me or him?

The coaching staff at Michigan has the Wolverines sitting pretty.

“Coach (Jim) Harbaugh that’s a pretty cool dude to be around,” Collins said. “The way he is on camera is how he is in person. He’ll talk to you about anything, he’ll joke around with you, dance with you, anything.”

Collins also talked about why he went public with Michigan being No. 1.

“Just hanging out with them, having conversation with my parents, they really loved it and I really loved it,” Collins stated.

If Michigan indeed leads, Georgia and Alabama look like the biggest challengers.

Ranked as the No. 1 recruit in Alabama per the 247Sports Composite, Collins said he talks often with Billy Napier and chatted with Nick Saban shortly before coming out to The Opening.

“He tells me I’m a big priority for them,” Collins said of talks with Napier. “The receiver board, a big-sized receiver like me playing on the outside the x position, he’s saying he has a lot of big plans for me if I come. He really wants me to come, he’s saying how he could use me in different ways.”

Collins has been to Georgia three times since Kirby Smart took over.

“I had to go up there and see what the new Georgia was like after Coach Richt left,” Collins said. “What Kirby is doing with them, he’s doing pretty good with them. They have Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm, them two are trying to get me up there, especially Jake he was talking to me last night wanting me to come up there.”

Fromm is also Collins’s teammate for 7-on-7. He enjoys the atmosphere in Athens for games.

“It’s an awesome experience,” Collins said. “It’s pack out, the crowd is yelling, I can see myself there.”

Collins added he’s looking to visit Clemson and LSU next

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - Littleton (Colo.) Valor Christian five-star quarterback Dylan McCaffrey checked in at The Opening Tuesday ready to spread the message “in person” regarding the Michigan Wolverines.

McCaffrey personally picked receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones and Nico Collins to be on his Hyper Cool Squad during 7-on-7 play. Those guys will be joined by fellow Michigan commits in A.J. Dillon and O’Maury Samuels, linebacker Josh Ross and defensive back Benjamin St-Juste.

I know my team has just about all the Michigan commits,” McCaffrey said. “I’m looking forward to finally playing with them. I’ve seen them, I’ve met a lot of them, but I’ve never actually played with them. I think playing with them is going to be a big step and I think it’s going to be real fun.”

The 247Sports Composite ranks McCaffrey as the nation’s No. 2 pro-style passer and No. 22 player overall. He is the jewel of Michigan’s class that currently ranks No. 5 overall and No. 2 in the Big Ten per 247Sports.

Besides Peoples-Jones and Collins, other Michigan targets that will be in Oregon this week with McCaffrey and company include linebacker Drew Singleton, cornerback Ambry Thomas, linebacker Jordan Anthony, tight end Josh Falo and offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert.

“I like to tell them we’re going to be a special team in a couple years,” McCaffrey said. “I believe that with my heart. I think our team is full of hardworking kids that’s going to make that a reality in the future.

“This is a great opportunity to really try and introduce myself and try and get to know them more. It’s tough just over social media to get to know somebody. I know from my brothers, college is all about the guys you’re going to be spending your time with. It’s four years with the football team, you spend all your time with them so I’m trying to get to know them, let them know we’re going to love them at Michigan and we’re going to spend a lot of time together in the future.”

Naturally McCaffrey has built that strong relationship with Collins and Peoples-Jones already.
“I’ve been talking to them a lot,” he said.

If I was DPJ I would definitely go to Michigan over Ohio State because Michigan has very few playmakers right now. He would get the ball a lot more there.

This recruiting by UM and OSU is incredible. I am kinda surprised that Michigan is landing all these studs from the deep south.
