ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopia has repatriated over 100,000 citizens from Saudi Arabia, Addis Ababa's Foreign Ministry said Thursday, following a violent crackdown against illegal immigrants in the oil-rich kingdom.
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom said that up to 50,000 more citizens are still expected to come home.
"Last night arrivals from Saudi reached 100,620," Tedros said in a statement, adding that "all citizens that were detained in Riyadh deportation camps are back."
Ethiopia started repatriating its citizens from Saudi Arabia last month after a seven-month amnesty period for undocumented immigrants expired, sparking violent protests between Ethiopian migrants and Saudi police.
Repatriation efforts have been "successful so far," the Foreign Ministry said.
"The number is increasing over time," foreign ministry spokesman Dina Mufti told AFP.
The Ethiopian government said three of its citizens were killed in the clashes with Saudi police.
Human Rights Watch has urged Saudi authorities to launch a probe into the violence, and warned of a potential "humanitarian disaster" for workers held in custody.
Dina said the repatriation operation, which started on November 13, could take a couple more weeks to complete.
"Hopefully we will do it as soon as possible... if the current pace continues, it may be it will be in a week or two," he said.
Large numbers of Ethiopians leave the country every year looking for work abroad, often in the Middle East.
Many face poor working conditions, mental and physical abuse, low pay and discrimination, according to the International Labor Organization.
In October, Ethiopia said it was banning nationals from moving to the Middle East for work after reports of maltreatment.
With 91 million citizens, Ethiopia is Africa's second most populous nation and also one of the continent's poorest; the majority of people live on less than two dollars a day.
Though it is one of the fastest growing economies on the continent, unemployment persists. Around 27 percent of women and 13 percent of men are jobless, according to the ILO.
Migrants from other nations are also returning home from Saudi Arabia.
Last week, official media in Sudan said more than 11,000 workers had returned voluntarily after the amnesty ended.

According to local authorities in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan, a woman convicted by Taliban to public stoning, was resuced by Afghan police forces in northern Kunduz province.
Provincial security chief Syed Sarwar Hussaini said the woman was charged with illicit relations with another man, and was ordered by Taliban to be stonned to death.
Mr. Hussaini further added that the woman was due to be executed in Dasht-e-Archi district, but was rescued after Afghan police forces were informed.
He said the man, who was also convicted for having illicit relations with the woman, managed to flee the area.
Another couple was also stonned to death in the same district three years back after they were found guilty of having illicit relations.
This comes as United Nations in its latest has said that more reports of violence against women were registered by Afghan authorities, and prosecutions and convictions under the law remained low, with most cases settled by mediation.
Un in its report also added that large numbers of cases were still resolved through informal dispute resolution mechanisms (jirgas and shuras).

A video has surfaced from the Al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria advocating the systemic genocide of Shi'ite Muslims for allegedly "damaging Mohammed's legacy" in perpetrating their beliefs.
The video opens with a speech from a judge in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, which has been a focal point of territorial fighting between the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad and rebel forces. The judge's job: to establish rule over the Syrian city through the implementation of Sharia, or Islamic religious law - including doling out execution orders.
Brandishing a Kalashnikov assault rifle, the judge turns to jihadi fighters in the Sinai Peninsula, urging them to resist calls from the Egyptian army to back down from fighting.
"Don't fear the Egyptian or Israeli armies, the judge declares" and calls for jihadi fighters to renounce their commanding officers and remind them that on the Islamic Day of Judgement, they will be held accountable for calling off the (global) Jihad pan-Islamist organizations like Al Qaeda support.
The Egyptian army has launched a wide-scale offensive against Al Qaeda linked groups in the region, as part of a larger struggle against Islamic terrorism. Al Qaeda operatives have responded with videos like these calling the Egyptians "enemies of Allah" and launching attacks of their own against Egyptian national forces.
The 17-minute video also showcases ISIS activity in Iraq, where two terrorists curse Shi'ites for "cursing the name of Mohammed."
Iraqi ISIS spokesmen emphasized that they dream of a battle against all those who dare to curse the first three caliphs Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman. While Sunni Muslims believe that these three caliphs inherited the succession of Islamic leadership from their prophet Mohammed, Shi'ites believe that Islam's founder designated his own successor, son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Talib.
The video also shows direct evidence of the ISIS's involvement in recent Iraq truck bombings. One bombing incident, said to be directed against the Iraqi army's front in the Anbar province in western Iraq, shows a huge explosion and a flash fire visible from hundreds of meters away. Trucks are also shown loaded with Al Qaeda terrorists, armed with heavy machine guns and aiming at Iraqi soldiers in the region.
Iraq has been the axis of an ongoing barrage of attacks, including execution-style killings and suicide bombings. The number estimated dead from sectarian fighting now includes over 6,000 since the beginning of 2013.
