People with the system say the film they put on the screen easily picks up scratches.
It's not a bad idea, especially it being a device that you touch the screen.
The idea or notion that "the dock" scratches the screen is silly, especially coming from people who claim to never use the dock because it scratches and people that only use the dock because the device itself is so underpowered that they never play handheld.
I have screen protectors on all my touchscreen devices. Mainly because of the oil from your fingers, dirty fingers, smudges, drips. I don't wipe down my devices before every use so when dust accumulates I just push it around and usually once a week or so I have to go over then with a microfiber cloth.
The same people probably have 70 inch TVs with scratches on them from wiping them down but they aren't crying about scratches.
I consider myself on the extreme end of using and carrying my devices whether a tablet, reader, switch, Microsoft surface. I typically take my devices and utilize them outside the house, especially in areas where one shouldn't. I.e. campsites, forests and fields, taking pictures and uploading them. I'm the first to admit I don't baby then but I'm not a complete fool with them, and they're just fine.
As far as whatever the other users in my house have been doing that cracks screen protectors, shatters them, puts holes in the center....that's on them.

already?
