For regular listeners of Soca, has there really been a shift in the content that has affected the carnival scene?

Shift in content? Can’t say I’ve noticed that. But it seems like there is a shift in the dominant sound. The Bouyon, Jab-jab, Jump-n-Wave, Jumpy and Power soca sounds are running the road. Groovy, Ragga, Sweet, Bashment Soca sounds are losing the dominance they had in the last decade.

Yeah it seems like the general consensus (at least from what I see on social media) has been that it’s gotten a lot more raunchier, which has bled over into the carnival scene. Is that true at all?

I guess. The costumes have become skimpier since they moved from the traditional Eastern Caribbean mas to the Brazilian style mas. Also, the lyrics are more raw, especially on the bouyon seen.

I mean, calypsoes and early soca were raunchy. But it was filled with cleverly written innuendos and double meanings.




But now it's just smut, so I see your point.



But the yutes like the raw smutty music, and the women love the skimpy shyt, so.
