I'm flipping to make a living right now. I have cards of all different values, low and very high end. The collector in me wants everything but I've really been focusing on what's best as an investment. Been doing some consolidating lately and plan on doing more in the future. I might wind up with a handful of really high end cards in the long run.
Passive income. Adjunct to my full time employment. Some of my high end cards I can consider part of my medium term portfolio. Would be nice to eventually liquidate. I have a lot of student loan debt. Don’t own a house. That’s where my cardboard money would go to. Figure I’ll sell about 50-75% of my Luka after he wins an MVP here, hopefully within the next couple years, and continues to maintain hype in the hobby. Hold a few pieces for long term.
Nice There's been a major uprise in the market since the pandemic began so it's good time to make some $$$. I didn't even get involved until I was furloughed from my first full-time job out of school in March. I was supposed to get my own place but plans obv fell apart, so I decided to start a collection while I do random part-time work so I can have a display for when I do get that pad. Luckily Boxing & MMA cards (outside of big names like Ali, Tyson, Conor, Rousey, Floyd, etc.) are a fraction the cost of MLB, NBA, & NFL so I can still save while I collect.
They both command a decent premium. Some of their stuff is stupidly overpriced, like high end RPAs. I think Zion prizms/optics are a bit undervalued at the moment. He barely played last year and the Zion-mania was curbed a decent amount. If he comes out strong, Pelicans make noise, and he can maintain availability, I think his market is in for a nice boom the way we saw with Luka in his sophomore season. Ja is more of a steady, known investment at this point. I think most of his cards are where you would expect them to be, when you consider the pricing of the entire hobby. Neither of them are cheap, but I think both have solid room to grow.
To add on, if Zion has a hot start, his prices will fly up like Luka. The numbers he was putting up in limited minutes were insane. They're already starting to tick up with the hype that always comes right before a season begins.
LOTTA people have a similar story to yours. That's why the prices have gone through the roof since COVID hit. Pretty sure it's gonna keep people hooked as well.
I've sent quite a few batches this year; maybe 6-8 different orders. I'm done for a while though. The turnaround times at PSA are insanely long because so many people are sending in everything they have. I have a few orders that I sent out at the beginning of July I'm still waiting on. It's just nuts right now.
Panini completely dropped the ball on the Timeless Moments auto set for that One and One product. They have like three actual classic moments and the rest are just random. Then when they actually got the right moment, like the Kawhi three in Game 7 of the ECF, they COMPLETELY botch the description: How the fukk does that happen? I wouldn't even want that if I was a Raptors fan because of that.
Dearron fox rookie cards have been going like crazy lately since he signed his Max contract. I was the top bidder for 2 of them for $50 for a few days, then at the last min, both shot up. One went for $1600 and the other for $2550 I managed to get a Jaron Jackson Jr 19’ card as my first purchase. Not really valuable as a resell, but I wanted something to officially start my collection. Currently negotiating on a rookie auto brandon clarke for the low. Hoping for the best
Damn, Nat Turner bought Collector's Universe (parent company who runs PSA). He's a legit die-hard collector. I wonder what kind of changes, if any, he'll make, especially when it comes to accountability and trimmed cards. Collectors Universe to be Acquired by Investor Group Led by Entrepreneur and Collector Nat Turner for Approximately $700 Million
I appreciate sets with obscure athletes. I always see people complain that there are no "big hits" in certain sets when there's already a million different variants of the big names you could cop a single of at anytime. I don't see the harm in having at least one auto/relic/whatever you're into in existence of someone who's not gonna be in a new checklist every 4 months.
