:manny: wrong direction is vague. thought he meant mis-hit. either way its because shes not comfortable at net

with her power, she could do a lot of damage coming in and adding a slice like you said

these are thing she could work on playing on clay too but we know that story there too

the WTA is just so volatile, you can think any woman has next and they will likely fall all the way off

I didn't think Osaka played poorly. That was a tough first round matchup but that's what happens when you barely play and fall in the rankings.

She was hosting at least one if not more social events over the weekend.

I imagine theres no pressing need to rapidly improve with her financials as strong as they are. I'd like to think her team is focused on a long term slow and steady rebuild of the psyche.

I'm speculating but I saw her take a picture of the scoreboard before exiting the court. I'm thinking shes taking images like that to remind herself of where she was at during different stages of this rebuild as landmarks. She doesnt want to just forget these moments but rather embrace them and grow.

Maybe that's wishful thinking and she just doesnt care as much as she used to but shes a competitor and I still believe in her.

There’s comes a point if she keeps falling I doubt she can mentally recover, it’s gotta be humiliating to lose in the first round for her. She’s been nothing but lackluster year.

Maybe maybe not. Everyone is different. Some people have different goals than others.

Example: for me, if I wasnt going to win a tournament I'd prefer to just lose first round rather than exhaust myself just to finish second. I used to throw second place medals in the woods and trophies in the trash. Is it really better to be off form and scrape by for a win or two or just lose and take the extra time off to rest and practice? She has a ton of money, if shes not playing well enough to win it all I'm sure she doesnt mind losing quick and getting it over with.

Whether she hits the film room and practice court before the week is over or not is a different subject

Her problems are mental, she loses confidence really quick

O

It’s both.

Man if I was advising her, i'd have her on the plane now and headed to participate in these next 5 tourneys and vulture points to move up in the seedings and get her confidence back

  • Week 37 (September 12) – WTA 250 Japan Women’s Open in Osaka, Japan
  • Week 38 (September 19) – WTA 250 Hana Bank Korea Open in Seoul, South Korea
  • Week 39 (September 26) – WTA 250 Tallinn Open in Tallinn, Estonia
  • Week 40 (October 3) – WTA 250 Jasmin Open Tunisia in Monastir, Tunisia
  • Week 41 (October 10) – WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Go win those 5 250 events will put her up around 2300 points and she's back in the top 15. She won't do it cause she's not that dedicated.

If she wasn't "mentally tough" how'd she beat Serena at the U.S. Open and win 4 majors?

Something happened mentally to her for sure but I don't think it has to do with the game itself

Didn't develop her game enough (no slice, stands on the baseline too often) and there are more players on tour that can handle her power on hardcourt. Collins is one of those players.

I think her ceiling now is a top 30 player capable of a deep run of a AO or US Open but that's it. In the end I think Gauff has a better career.

Upset Alert for Round 2:

Garin
Nava
Van Rijthoven
Fucsovics
Monteiro
Draper
Fognini
Sousa
Schmiedlova
Rodina

Far more potential upsets on the ATP side than WTA side imo. Upset by my metric is +200 or more on the odds as an underdog. Can add Serena there too I suppose. At the very least I expect most of those dudes to at least sneak a set. Someone like Sousa is just good betting value at +950. Draper is in form and Felix is shaky. If Fabio decides to show up he can challenge Rafa. Doubt he shows up. Fucsovics Fokina and Giorgi vs Keys are my favorite matches of the day. Ruud is beatable so I like Van Rijthovens chances at +500. Garin vs De Minaur is on now and might go 4 hours. Garin was just ranked 26th so him being like +450 before the match is kind of insane. I personally put like 1 dollar on a massive parlay to win thousands then did a lesser round robin bet and also a parlay with many of them just winning one set rather than winning.

coco has a similar problem in that she cant really hit flat. clay will always be her best surface imo but she has more all around potential than naomi..im looking for her to be really elite on the serve and am praying she changes out of the western grip
