Djokovic may be the third best player in the world right now and can keep some of these matches "close", but "close" just means 7-6 or 6-4 at this point in time. As close as it may be (not that close), there is still a clear gap now. His only real chance is to play perfect and hope Alcaraz or Sinner have a horrible day or get eliminated before facing him.

It had to drive Djokovic nuts that he would probably continue to win quite a few Grand Slams if there weren't two generational players at such a young age playing now, and I'm not someone who ever really uses the term "generational".
