Transhumanism, abbreviated as H+ or h+, is an international intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.[1] Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of emerging technologies that could overcome fundamental human limitations, as well as study the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies. They predict that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label "posthuman".[1]

Post articles, questions, ideas, criticism, whatever.

This is happening now so need to focus on its future potential entirely.

I was listening to this podcast/speech today about something like this, not transhumanism per se but a global mind type thing

I can't help but feel that it's coming from a place that's kinda blind to the reality of human life out there

we can't solve malaria but we want to transform into another organism

I know that this is not a conclusive response because obviously once the technology or setup is there then it can spread, but my point is just that I feel its super optimistic

I don't understand this argument zerozero. That's like saying "Why are we sending people to the moon when Humans are still dying of malaria?" in the 60s.

Transhumanism and nanotechnology has a lot of upside to fixing some of these problems in 3rd World Countries.

Yeah I'm not saying don't work on it, I'm talking about the actual descriptive side of this. I feel like the kinda people who sit around thinking about this kinda thing might have blinkers on to some degree and not realize how far we are from approaching this stage

I'd argue that we are approaching this stage right now. You just don't realize it because you are "used" to it.

You already carry around an additional "brain" for computing, remembering, communication, organizing, etc.. (Your smartphone). Your facebook serves as a rudimentary extension of your memory, storing your pictures, ideas, feelings. Prosthetics are becoming robotic, and we already have cases where these limbs might be controlled by the mind.

It isn't as far as you think.

also now that I think about it, the singularity in particular sounds like a tech version of a rapture fantasy

hang on let me read that paper you linked

in the singularity we reach a point at which suddenly everything in the human species changes very quickly and nothing is like it was before, indescribably so. that's a rapture breh (suddenly being taken out of this world into another). In fact I just googled "singularity rapture" and a ton of people have made the comparison

We're already getting there brehs. You'll start to see some gene doped and technologically modified athletes sooner than you think. Its an interesting conundrum, because you have to wonder how much change/modification is acceptable....

Nanomachines is an interesting avenue, especially for medical stuff.
