They did him kinda dirty.

I'd like to see the script to really see how great the role should have been.

On that note, imagine how much greater the film would have been with Eddie in it.

Yeah, they originally thought Eddie was going to play the role of Winston (no matter what the hell that Cac producer says) but when he declined and Ernie Hudson took the part, due to the fact he wasn't considered a superstar black entertainer at the time, they completely changed the script & put Hudson's character on the back burner.
