Are you running Win 8.1?? There's a bug on there that my cousin's rig have encountered whereby the hard disk is constantly being read/written to. It's evident by the task manager showing 100% usage for the hard drive in the performance tab of the task manager. It may not be that but the symptom you described was similar(Lock ups, slow downs etc.)
I just went through a nightmare with this. after trying a few things, I was starting to think my new gpu must be fuct and/or my psu didn't have enough juice. that didn't make much sense, but it was a major HW change that happened right before this problem started popping up. but after a little reading and experimenting, it turned out to be a faulty SATA cable :snoop:

I still haven't fixed it i think. I suspect the issue has to do with either the hd itself but I haven't ran a diagnostic on the drive yet. I told him to get a ssd because he's blown away by how fast my pc boots up. This was the most frustrating issue I've encountered because the pc slows to a crawl when it starts.

try another SATA cable if you have one. also make sure the drive and mobo have the latest firmware

shyt was very frustrating. shyt would hang up, not shut-down, hang on the bios screen, take forever to boot... anyway, I'm glad I figured it out before I threw everything in the bushes

@Fatboi1 I remember you saying your friend had a problem with his HDD running at 100% all the time on Win 8.1.

Mine doesn't run at 100% on the time, but when it's downloading off of steam it does. I'm not sure if that is normal (it doesn't seem like it should be that high). How did your friend fix the issue?

My cousin issue was never fixed. The 100% disk usage just goes on and off. @daze23 had that issue and he said it was as simple as changing the SATA cable.
