Like everything else about this pope, the story is overblown.

He never actually excommunicated the mafia. He said they are "not with god" in some random homily. That's not the same as a formal excommunication.

i didn't mean to say that, but here in germany there have been a lot of molesting under the eyes of the church, and they swept/sweep it under the rug. priests just get reassigned.
(1) What you mean to say is that "there has been a lot of ACCUSATIONS of molestation"...

(2) If you were a teacher, and some little boy or girl came out after 10 years, and said you molested him/her, would you want the school board to just throw you under the bus...?

(3) The situation is NOT as simple as people make it seem to be...I know society holds a special place for little children, but science tells us, little children can be very devious and malicious, regardless of how angelic the wider society may think they are...

(4) If these priests have been prosecuted and found guilty in a court of law, then it is up to the justice system to punish them according to the law of the country...I don't expect the church to throw them under the bus just because they have been accused of molestation...

(5) It is like a union...To stay strong, the union has to support and protect its members against all accusations until concrete evidence has been presented...And sometimes the union will protect its members even when there is reasonable evidence...

You excommunicate yourself. And Pope John Paul II the Great did it first. But it's still pretty cool of Frank to do. He's also trying to reform the Church's bank, apparently, so it does tie in to the posts in this thread about what's happening with the Church's money, who's giving and where it's going. I agree with those who don't think they're going to do him like Pope John Paul I (gone too soon). Too obvious.

Japan, but from the 989
1. Which priests are going to deny communion to these mafia guys?
2. I bet someone is beefing up their personal security.
