Am I the only one who thinks names have a significant impact on your life?

For instance if you name your daughter Jezebel you're already setting up negativity in her life.

I feel like I have to pick a name that has a good meaning for everything. Even for something as mundane as internet user names it has to mean something for me personally.

Anyone else feel the same?

My nephews name is "Champion"... He's already becoming a lil competitive beast... He's taking to his name 100%

Would you consider it "selfish" of a parent to name their child a stereotypically "black" name (i.e.: Jerome, Tyrone, Shaniqua) knowing the disadvantages in life they'll face because of it? Is it be wrong to name them something more European so they have an easier time assimilating into larger society?

I dislike European names and how common they are

You don't necessarily have to give them European names for them to assimilate into larger society. I don't plan on giving my kids European or "stereotypical black names" either

Nah my user name comes from Salahuddin (one of my favorite historical figures) who was a Turk. I like the word Turk so....bam.

I knew a Nigerian who loved his name because besides having the name of his people which stretch back many years, his name implied "greatness." Whenever he was in a slump, he realized he had to "live up to the name." Having a positive name and one that represents your heritage is a huge bonus.
