I can attest to this personally. I'm a radio host, a producer and (sometimes) rapper so I host and go to alot of open mic and showcases and even perform and do hype man work for my friends. In my travels I have learn NY crowds are rough. Especially the hood spots. The hipster crowd is a little more amenable. But you these types of people in most spots:

1) I have already looked at ya dirty sneakers and I'm not going to listen you

2) I'm a rapper to and my show will be better so why am I even listening to you

3) I'm just here to boo nikkas. It's what I do

I dunno but we get love from out of town and out the country. We tour in Europe and Eastern Europe and get mad love even if we don't speak the same language. They are more open to hearing music, good or bad. They give you a chance. Unless you're already famous, NY don't show much love. That's why we cheat and bring our own crowds. fukk it though, I still love scene ad glad to be apart of the up and coming hip hop culture.
