Hip hop stars aren't made the same as they were back in the 90's. You have cats like MIKE, Mavi, Niontay, etc. who aren't widely known but are the underground cats who'll potentially be the new stars of tomorrow. Then, you have cats like Boldy James, Rome Streetz, etc. who aren't regarded as stars in the states, but outside of it they're highly regarded as the top dogs in the game. Basically, new stars aren't brought to us like back in the day, you have to find them and ride with them until they finally get their moment.

matters for the genre bro, this is a hip hop website always has been. numbers mattered for the genre in 02 and in 95. they always will matter...this is the first year hip hop legit is not a top 2 or 3 genre in world in prolly 30-40 years

How could numbers matter in '95 when I just told you we had no way to track them?

I'm talking about us, as fans. Who sold what is some internet sh*t. It can't even be argued "well, I hope it sells so the artist can make more music" any more because anybody with a smart phone can record music and videos now.

There's zero incentive to care about numbers unless you're in the industry. One of the major issues of the last 15-20 years is fans acting like they're A&Rs.

one hip hop artist has sold over 150K first week....two if you count the drake party album but that was an rnb album...the entire year???? yeah shyt is down bad

To be fair who has released albums? The big and medium names haven't been active. It really seems like the battle completely froze the genre commercially. Besides Kendrick and Drake nobody dropped, nobody had hits, etc. Basically we got two big albums from Future/Metro which sparked the beef and then nothing besides GNX and Drake/Party. That's it. Mainstream wise, not talking about the (great) underground albums that have come out.

I don't get it. The easy answer is that budgets weren't open, labels were looking elsewhere, etc. But when shyt gets tight that's not a bad time to get some motion...and nobody really tried. I figured Mustard would be busy as fukk after last year. In reality he did some r&b shyt and that's about it. It seems like malpractice that nobody out west - Jay Rock, Chike, YG, etc - ran to him for a summer anthem. Like...we didn't even get a "oh he tried but that shyt ain't it" misfire. Nobody fukking tried.

Then out south...Future didn't do anything. Can we give him a pass since he dropped multiple projects last year? Sure. But shyt was wide open this summer for a classic Future anthem. Wide open for Baby. Gunna did his thing and that's it.

It's deeply rooted but for the last 20 years or so hiphop has been obsessed with praising lackluster mediocrity sh1t and Charlagmagne (journalist/media) the biggest d1ck riding culprit just got cut some bank for 200 million.

It's going to become even worst. I suggest young black creatives find a new lane mix in the hiphop beats with some new rock or soul sh1t. Try something!! :bryan:

Also we living off pure nostalgia, hiphop bank is made in art museums and retrospective presentations. KRS has said ...

If you can critique a culture, it's dead

It's deep but yeah hiphop culture all the essence and all that is long gone. These are some old men in jordans reminiscing on records and podcasts. There's a lane for that but it is not a popping culture. Like KRS said ...

KRS-One suggesting that the very act of critiquing a culture implies its decline or lack of vitality.

He has been quoted as saying, "If you can critique a culture, it's dead," implying that a truly vibrant and living culture is in a constant state of evolution and participation, rather than being a static object that can be analyzed from a detached perspective [1]. The essence of his argument is that living cultures are experienced and shaped by their members, and once they become a subject for external critique, they have lost their dynamic, inherent life force.
