play into people’s insecurties or highlight things in commercials like acne, dark spots, discoloration etc to make women think something’s wrong with them and present a fix it or cover up: make up and CAKE
society does this with skin bleaching as well, white supremacy + capitalism. it’s not as socially acceptable in terms of commercials but in white supremacy it’s engrained subconsciously that dark = bad, white = good.

so it can create insecurity and self esteem issues that can make someone really insecure and have low self esteem and people buy into that shyt
