nikkas sayin NY fell off and not coming back...I'm just showing you how and why it happened. Showing those who don't know where their roots are.

NY is who waved the white flag! You had every other city in America calling you all haters and you finally caved. LOL first it was reluctantly, a lot of nikkas held out like K Slay. But eventually you all started listening to other regions artist and actually liking it!

*Yall booed Outkast at a awards show*

If you're under 30 you may not even remember how mighty and conceited your city was!

I remember when David Banner said that when he spit a hot verse in front of the Wu Tang and they laughed at him for being a southerner, that was fukked up. As much as I love the Wu, it was karma that finished NY rap on the mainstream.

NYC liked Outkast, we just didn't think they deserved to win that award/were better than our artists. You're really exaggerating NYC's "hatred" for other regions. I wouldn't say that we waived a "white flag", I think a lot of the younger demographic actually liked the music and others aren't as interested as they once were.

Being in the hood doesn't = larger talent pool of rappers. You're assuming everywhere you go there's a bunch of rappers spittin. It's not like that.
In NY everyone raps.
Exactly...plus, what does the black population or percentage of the city that's "Hood" have to do with a city's output as far as hip hop talent? I mean wit that logic, a city like Detroit should be on top of the game as far as creativity in Hip-Hop...I mean, I know they got an underground n whatnot, but they're just as identity-less as any other city thats following trends. Again thats just an example tho. Ppl on here just love to hate on NY cuz they're jealous they ain't from here.

Oh i agree, that's another hole in OP & the rest of them theory. There's clearly been a shift in hiphop culturally away from the inner city to the suburbs. NY doesn't lack rappers in the hood or ghetto's, it lacks suburban rappers. Saying NY lacks suburban rappers would be a better point then blaming gentrification...and it would still be wrong.

They would give passes to certain people who repped NY HARD! You wouldn't know Premo was from Tx or Guru from Mass. They wore NY like a badge! Also they always had the story ready to validate how NY they were. Premo with the "I spent every summer in NY as a kid" and Guru with the "I spent more time in NY than Boston".

They dikkrode NY so hard the city gave them a pass since they were making NY style music and well.

Anyone on this site who was a grown man in the 90's and from NY, if they tell the truth can cosign what I say. If you weren't from NY...you were garbage for that reason alone!

Yeah I remember those days when people still thought that all southern rappers are mentally slow. When the likes of Luda and Ti blew up, people HAD to accept that.

THE MECCA OF HIP HOP

1st for all the NON-New Yorkers. Please don't speak on NY Culture when you know nothing about it. Next as far as NYC not having an idenity is so false. NY will always be NY. Just cause a certain mainstream rappers are rapping a certain way doesn't mean NY lost it's indenity. There are plenty of underground emcees here still spitting. The issue isn't NY lost it's idenity. The issue is Hop Hop Lost it's Lyricism. You have folks today thinking Drake represent Lyrical when 90's Lower Teir emcees would rap circles around him and most of the rappers in the game today. Lyricism is the reason NY isn't where it should be. Hip Hop threw Lyrics in the bushes. NYC is known for Legendary Lyricism. No Region can say that but NY. South can't say it, West can't say it, Midwest can't say it. NYC is know for it's Lyrics. As for as Production. Sampling laws changed which hurt NYC 's sound. I don't knock Tim and the Neptunes or Dre and g funk sound cause I feel they brought something to Hip Hop. But nothing to me messes with a gutter Premo beat done right with Lyricism.

As for Gentrification. It's true, I was walking through Marcy and Bedstuy and Biggie and Jay would not recognized their neighborhoods today. There are still Blacks and Latinos there but there are so many Rich White Hipters trying to live out their hip hop fantasies there too. NY is clearly trying to price Blacks and other minorities out of their hoods. NY is basically a Police State now also which is making it even harder for minorities dealing with the bias a$$ NYPD. But even then New York has something that other regions don't. New York IS Hip Hop. When you see the graffiti or ride the train or are in different borroughs. It's in the air, it's apart of the City. Who else can say that? Also Let's not act like New York ain't running Hip Hop business cause they are as Puff, Jay and 50 routinely top the Forbes list. Also a new NYC rapper coming up has it harder than other regions.

How do you live up to Biggie, Jay Z, NaS, Rakim, Kane and KRS? If I'm a new rapper outta NY I have to climb a damn mountain top to even be in that discussion. Other regions don't have to live by those standards. Also New York always has a TOP rapper in the game in every era, no region can say that. Even now in the so called Drought. NaS still dropping #1 albums, Jay is on top the world and yes even Nicki is popular. New York still has the most Classic rap albums of any region. So though the movement isn't as strong as the 80's and 90's. I think other regions are jumping up and down about nothing. Being on "Top" in Hip Hop is a temporary thing that shifts back and forth. But being the MECCA of Hip Hop. The Origin of Hip Hop never leaves, never dies. So again the O/P got it wrong. It's not a matter of New York never coming back. New York never left and will always be the representation of Hip Hop. In conclusion though he's been an underachiever, Papoose did NY justice on that Premo record.

People are just not into the grimey old school sound of NY hip hop anymore...aint nothing wrong with that. Just like everything ish evolves...and it is what it is. Joey Badass, and Vado got that traditional NY sound, but not many people is checkin for em like that.

Once upon a time an emcee aspired to be "the best ever" or "the greatest emcee of all time"

now they aspire to get a radio single
