I really just figured this out.
The same way MC's jobs back in the day was to big up the DJ and highlight his skills, that's what these rappers now and days do for producers

Much like the rappers back in the late 70's they weren't lyrical, just there to get the party started and allow people to vibe out to the DJ's. That's what these rappers doing for producers now and days.

I get your point but not quite. If that was the case, it'd be "Metro Boomin and the Furious Friends" instead of Future - Purple Reign. Nahmean? Rappers are still the frontmen.

I've always maintained that hip hop is a DJ/producer culture. Because... it is. If you don't have a good DJ/producer, you're dead in the water.

I agree that you need a go to DJ/producer like how Guru had preme, but nowadays alotta dudes are coming up off cheap beats that were leased and mass produced instead of tailor made for them I doubt they'll have that kind of longevity though.

exactly

My point wasn't even that you need a go-to producer. It's just the simple fact that the beat has always mattered more in hip hop than the rapper if you're talking about what makes and carries a song melodically. BUT the rapper is the frontman and has been since the 80s.

While this is true, there still are a few artist who, at least in my opinion, have very good chemistry with the producers who make their beats.
Future and Metro Boomin.
Drake and Noah.
Gucci and Zaytoven.
